Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
He's beautiful!
But PLEASE tell me you don't leave him chained up with that choke chain collar...? I've know dogs personally who've gotten them embedded in their necks from pulling and pulling on them because it never loosened up and dogs who've strangled themselves to death getting their chains wrapped around things and fighting to get free and collapsing their airways with those collars.

Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
i have no choice he broke his collar and broke his chain 2 times... i dont wanna loose him... when i chain him out side its only for 5 mins or less...
Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
But You do have a choice. Take him to school!
Dogs that breaks away from being tied up are usually dogs that are bored, are not getting enough physical or mental stimulation and exercise, or are untrained and have no recall.
A choke chain is not a collar, it is a training tool, and a training tool that should only be used by experience hands on top of that.
Quality rolled leather collars with steel or brass buckles are excellent for large dogs and they don't break and are certainly much safer.
Also the rolled leather doesn't break their coats either.
and we have some big chows here well over 100 lbs and they can't break those collars. ( just tossing out ideas)

Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
I agree with the rolled leather collar. That's what all of mine have and get tied out with(we don't have a fenced in yard), my smallest girl is 30 lbs and my largest is 105 lbs.
And I agree that training and metal stimulation will help a LOT.

Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
He's beautiful, and looks like he likes to dig in the snow. Which is fun, but I'll bet he's got a strong prey drive, which means he needs lots of exercise, especially as he is young, that will help with the breaking away and running. I will also warn about choke chain type collars, they also can be broken, (My Collie was very good at it) and they can also be slipped off, if they are fitted properly, with room in them, then many dogs can figure out that if they back up and the chain loosens they can pull it over their heads. My Dreamdancer is an expert at it, (even though he wears a rolled type, not the chain type) For walks etc he wears his gentle leader harness.

Jasper's broken 3 choke chains. Which is why I don't really trust them anymore.Victory wrote:He's beautiful, and looks like he likes to dig in the snow. Beautiful dog! Get him a fence! He'll have so much fun patrolling "his" territory!
Re: Boost black male Chow Chow
yes a fence... i was planning on it but since im selling my house this summer and im buying my grandparents house, which is all fenced up... i have to wait till summer so he cant enjoy being loose in the yard!
when i go at my grand parents with him, he really enjoy's being loose outside... when i put him out he run's around the yard for like 5 minutes non stop! he likes it...

Great looking dog. I really love the black chows
Re: Boost black male Chow Chow (new pics)
He is darling! As to the collar issue, I tether my Chow as well. She goes out on her harness and a 40 foot coated steel cable. She can run and play, and can stay outside for hours without any problems. She made many escapes her first few years, but always comes back, or will jump in the car when I catch up with her. She always likes to run in the woods and then pops out on the road behind our property. Except the time she caught the police's attention one night in an enclosed business patio next door...well it was us human's that looked suspicious, but that has not happened in a long time now. For a Chow, I will always use a harness.

You are making all the right decisions.

If you are, I give chow assertion clinics starting in May in Prescott ( only about an hour away) - maybe you'll considering participating in one.

I really enjoyed the video of Boost's zoomie in the back yard - what a long zoomie! Liked the time out for some snow munchies
Thanks for taking him off the choke collar - have heard too many bad stories of dogs being on choke collars all the time.
