Yumi's operation on monday

Well tomorrow is the day for Yumi's cruitiate operation, it was supposed to be Friday but was cancelled due to staff shortage the vet did not want to operate without full staff support and for that I am grateful. We have no idea how it was done she was sound in the morning for her walk and lame when i came home in the afternoon. So off she went to the vets. A week on rimadyl as a precaution and to see if it was a sprain injury after 5 days i was not happy so took further action.
Today My wonderful friends Helen and Claire came to our house and helped build a ramp from my back door to our yard so Yumi and the old girl Efe did not have steps to go up and down we hope by building the ramp will take pressure off the leg when navigating in and out the house. And for Efe as she is getting a little creaky in her bones.
As any owner would be, sleep has not been a thing i have had much of. It is just with the worry of the operation. I will let you all know how we get on tomorrow.

I am sure all will go well with her. I'd watch the rimydahl though, nasty medication that can cause some real problems. It was developed for humans but rejected for human use, then minimally tested on animals and okayed for animal use. But it's history is splotchy to say the least, and the company that makes it can not be trusted at all. There are better and safer non steriodal anti inflamation medicines out there for dogs out there. Personally I would go with cosequin for pets. And you want to go with the pet prescription version, not the dietary suppliments for humans, which may or may not have the actuall amount of drugs in them.

You could even put Efe on them and see if it helps with her creaky joints.

I an a huge fan of homoeopathic and natural treatments where possible and lucky to have access to a vet who specialises in this form of treatment.
efe is on devils claw, flexwise, sulphur and omega oils, the other girls are on flexwise that has a dog dosage on its website and omega oils, and taishi takes sulphur for her skin also.

here we have big issues with metacam, rimadyl has been OK for yumi, metacam made her sick on the weight to dosage ratio halving the dose helped her much more, rimadyl is a short term anti inflammatory and pain killer but is Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug as you know.

I am happy to give it her short term as she has suffered no undue side effects thus far, then she can just have the previous supplements stated above once the initial pain and swelling from the surgery has passed.

Well we dropped her off at 8am this morning i hated to leave he,r but what can you do, martin drove us home again and now i am sat here all twitchy and wanting my baby back!! Have power walked the huskies they are tired out now, just hate this waiting game

Positive thoughts and keeping busy will get you thru ....it will be over before you know it and Yumi won't even remember it after you spoil her for a few days when she gets home

Yumi is home and tired and uncomfortable, we are exhausted, They shaved both legs and she looks like a lowchen now! the vet i could not see for a consult as she was called away in an emergency so we are having a post op consult on wednesday

the near hind leg the cruitiate was totally gone as we knew but how bad it was we dont know until we see the vet who performed the operation i will update when i have all the information, anyway this has been repaired and she is now in a leg cast/dressing with her pyjamas on to help protect dressing

but unfortunately the other leg is also compromised although not to the degree the other one there was definite drawer movement in the good leg but it may get worse as the operated leg will now be compensated on the other leg adding extra stress on the other ligament and may cause that to give way also........ so sitting her fingers crossed that wont happen

Thank you all for the well wishes, after a rough night yumi and I had no sleep, she has been much more settled today getting to grips with the cast dressing on her leg and her fist lot of antibiotics and pain killers are helping no doubt. We are back tomorrow for post op consult and hopefully i will have a clearer idea what's been done and what going to be done and what risks are for the so called good leg! will get to see the x-rays too.

Hi there the vet visit was a bizarre one and the vet i found a little abrasive if i am honest, and did not really get any answers as my question fell on deaf ears, the only thing i did find out was the vet felt yumi was dumped on her without being consulted she did not want to do a (insert posh name here) suture, she wanted to refer me to a specialist for a TPLO......do not worry I have it on good authority that the tplo operation has not been proven to be any more sucessful than the suture in large dogs so i was happy for the suture to be done even if the vet was not happy of couse this unhappiness i was unaware of until our consult Ah well i am not to concerned over bad vet bedside manner as long as they do a good job thats all that matters and it seems a good job has been done.
We do however have to go back weekly for the next few weeks for injections and me a weekly leture of her displeasure no doubt lol, I am not at home so cannot tell you what the injections are called,
Yumi herself is doing ok keeping being rested and just yard breaks until monday, we keep her confined to the kitchen when we are not watching her as she has made loving eyes at the sofa and thats a NO NO

unfotunately my father was rushed in hospital last night (Thurs) with beathing difficulties, i am their carer in the daytime doing shopping or taking them shopping, cleaning ect ect, as mum is disabled due to a head injury from as fall in New years eve 2007 and cannot be left alone as dad is usually her fulltime carer although he suffers with c.o.p.d that has been bad of late i really just help out with the physical work I am at his house now being grateful he has a laptop lol.

So i have not seen her today by my Martin is taking good care of her although she is able to wrap him around her paw I am back home for a night tomorrow to see my furkids and partner, and mums sister will be taking care of her saturday relieving me of my duties to get a break hopefully dad will be out on monday.

Wow, you have a full plate to deal with .. Good for you being able to get past the bedside manners problem.. Its not easy but if Yumi's surgery went well thats all that matters.

Sounds like an interesting vet visit! But, as you said, as long as the job was done right. I hope your dad will soon be home, and you'll get to see Yumi soon!

I am home now for tonight and yumi is just fine as are my others her wound is dry and clean and she has not touched it saying that she has been living in blue pyjamas since the operation this stops any contact from my other dogs curiosity and yumi's. she has a little fluid around the hock joint but that is to be expected since its less than a week since the operation. She is back in on Monday for a check up.

yumi is healing well. Still a small amount of swelling. Was so nice to be home but so hard to leave this morning. Re we all had a hug yumi had a brush and clean pajamas. Thank you for all your well wishes.

I hope your dad makes a good and speedy recovery. Then you can spend a little more TLC on Yumi. It is a hard job caring 24/7 for someone, and I am sure your parents are both grateful for the help.

Thank you my dad seems to be improving we are hoping today Monday, will be a day where we find out if he is coming home. I think i miss the dogs more than they miss me i have a great partner who the dogs especially yumi and efe has wrapped around their little black paws he has been fab the last few days we are just working things between us.
I am so glad we put the work into the dogs that we have, as now in times of crisis i have strong independent dogs that are secure with being left alone and who on the odd day have minimal contact with their humans although we do everything we can to ensure they get what they need first, they are so well behaved even the huskies!they make me so proud and it eases my anxiety when i am away from them. I was up at 4am to get home to feed them and sit with them for an hour whilst mum is asleep then i will have to leave but martin will be on his way home from work then so they are not left for long as a rule.
I know my parents are grateful i am willing to do what i can to make sure they have good quality of life and this incident is not a common one but was due to happen at some point, i am usually there in the for a few hours a day and not at night, i understand my fathers role now as he is mums carer 24/7 and he is ill himself i think it just took its toll, he is getting what he needs now and will be taking steps to ensure this continues as we are trying to re-house them into a single storey house or other accommodation that will help with everyday living this is what they both want, but it has took time to get people interested and its an uphill battle.
