Need help!

Post by KathrynH »

I posted here, because I wanted people to see it quicker. Buddha is bleeding...well he was, it seems like it has clotted up, but he won't let me near him long enough to find out what happened exactly, and DH thinks I'm overreacting :-x He has a clot of blood behind his dew claw. I thought maybe he caught it on something, but it's behind it, it doesn't look like he caught it. It's not bleeding anymore, but there's blood all over both paws. He's not in any pain, he's running along the fence with our neighbor dog...in the dirt...should I leave him alone? He's not limping or anything, and it doesn't seem serious.

I would try to get him and and clean up the paws. Also check where the boo-boo is located to make sure there isn't a teensy splinter or a nail, maybe he got too enthusiastic in chewing his dew claw and nipped himself, whatever caused the bleeding to occur. Maybe before you get him in have a warm wash cloth (dipped in warm water, a bit of salt and maybe a splash of distilled white vinegar) already ready for you and DH to rub his paws and clean with. If you continue to let him run around in the dirt, you never know what other bacteria and parasite might seep into his system.

Here's a thread someone started on how to stop bleeding. It might come in handy if the scab drops and you need to clot it once again. http://forum.chowchow.org/viewtopic.php ... ng#p153992 Also check the chow emergency thread located on the top of the community section.

Hi, From working at a vet's , the major thing is finding it and cleaning it so you don't end up with an infection that can make matters much worse. If it is a cut on the paw we use some homemade booties or you can use a sock to protect the foot while it heals and keeps it clean. Just velcro or tape the sock around the top when you get it on. Good luck.

Hey there! I finally got Buddha to let me look at him. I had to practically sit on him to look at it, but as soon as he relaxed he started cleaning it, and still wouldn't let me near it unti he was done. It looks like he caught the pad behind his dew paw on something, there's a small gash. So, we got it really clean and covered. I kind of freaked a little, but I worry about my baby HA! Anyway, he's doing awesome, and doesn't seem to realize anything is wrong with him, but we are keeping an eye on it. Thanks! Kat

Yeah, he doesn't even know he's hurt to be honest. He's running and playing, he just won't settle down. So, he's doing good :) THanks!

Hi! I was just wondering, what color is his pad supposed to be when it's healing?

depends on what you mean, if it's a cut or scrap it will scap over and look like a scap we would have, shinny black, with maybe dark red where the blood came to the surface but didn't scap. Why, what color is his wound? yellow, greenish or any color like that would indicate an infection.

Well, it's smooth and red, like a scab, it's the same color it was when he cut it to be honest, that is why I'm not too freaked about, but I just want to make sure I shouldn't be freaked. He still tries to clean it when the bandage is off, but he isn't limping or whining or anything else. I know Chow's have a high tolerance for pain, so that he's acting normal may not mean anything, but I can usually tell when something is wrong ya know?
