I really like the old chows, those are very handsome chows.

What's interesting is that this is a depression-era advertisement, a time when so many children suffered from malnutrition diseases such as
rickets, etc. It was also an era of the Chow Chow's large wave of
popularity, after being owned by the wealthy and famous in the roaring twenties, including President Coolidge.

The presidential seal inspired unscrupulous sorts to attempt to capitalize on the resulting chow craze. As often happens when celebrityhood shines it unstinting spotlight on a breed, too many ill-bred, ill-tempered, nasty-spirited chows were foisted on unsuspecting, uneducated buyers. Their dismay earned the chow a reputation as not only untrustworthy but also, in some cases, dangerous.

Breeders whose love for the chow was genuine, not financial, were able to rehabilitate the breed and its reputation during the 1950s and 1960s. Their work was undone to a great extent by a second wave of popularity that overwhelmed the breed from 1979, when annual chow registrations stood at 11,739, until 1988, when new registrations totaled 50,781, an increase of 333 percent put the chow the sixth most popular breed. Once again, however, popularity went before a fall; and between 1986 and 1996, annual new registrations of chows had fallen to 13,587, just 16 percent higher than they had been in 1979.

No stats but they have fewer breathing problems, hence fewer problems with overheating, heart issues etc. My open faced long nosed chows don't even snore. snoreing is cute to a certain point, but it is caused by a partially opstructed air-way and therefore is a sign of breathing issues. Also those longer legs and slightly leaner bodies add to their athleticism which is always good.

What a great trip back. Those are some beautiful chows and not what you would see in a ad today.

Really short noses can have allot of problems attached to them. It is mostly common knowlege.

Oh, you mean the breathing issues. i understand that, I was looking to see if people knew of any other health issues.

I do find it interesting that Millie (open face) has had to have another entropion operation, where as (closed face) Alf has perfect eyes. I would have thought it would be the other way around...
