Some guidance....

Post by Mellakapella »

Hi there,

I have owned a rough coated chow before and now I have a new Chow pup. I do not think he is 100% chow. (not that it matters, I love him to bits!) But I would like to know what you think he might be a cross with. The lady I bought him from sent me pictures of the dad a black chow and the mom is also chow ( I saw her, her fur is just a bit short, full blue tongue, lion mane the works.) Now you never know and I have asked her for more info on the dad but no response - I would just like to know what Blue is mixed with. He is 17 weeks and weighs about 39 pounds/18 kgs. He has a pink stripe on his otherwise blue tongue. His hair is short (the breeder said that the mom's hair was only fully grown when she was about one) Some days his ears stand up, other days they flop down. I've done so much research om different types of fur and ears and shedding. I have seen a few forums where people had a similar query and would appreciate your input (he fits all the personality traits of a chow though)

Oh My Goodness he is adorable! Smooth chows have a short coat. BUT, with his longer nose and tail-set I would guess that he might only be about 1/2 to 3/4 chow. (just a guess)

I agree with Cindy on the tail set. It's an 'action' photo though, so hard to tell with any certainty. I can't see the ears as they would lay normally and the front paws are separated in the sand. At 1st glance, I would also suggest that he is a mix, but more photos may tell a different story. Just for reference, I am posting a photo of my smooth chow. That's Toby at about 6 months.

AAAAW they are so cute, I have seen pics of smooth haired chows and they are so cute, he is currently shedding. His mother also had shorter hair but still that lion mane. I took a photo from behind as I know the legs are also a give away. His tail is curled onto his back and some days his ears stand up. He is super cute, I really don't care if he is a mix - Just curious as to what you guys think. He is shedding like crazy though. I don't even know where all the hair comes from.
