Just got a chow pup!

Post by Decayin »

a few days I picked up my precious pup at 7 weeks close to 8 weeks old. She is very quiet, does not cry when I leave the room. She does her business outside whenever someone lets her out, I've only found her to poop inside if no one is home. I've gotten her a toy, a little bed which she sleeps in at night, but she also likes to move from the bed to tile floors and back and fourth. She gets along with strangers, I've had friends come over and she does not growl at them or anything. One of the issues I am worried about so far is that she does not really respond at all when I call for her or get her attention. She just lies there. Should I be worried about this? She is my first dog and I don't want a disobedient companion.

Hi, my husband and I just got our first chow chow pup too!! We picked her up at 6 weeks as we wanted time to bond with her over a long weekend. She has been near perfect!! The firts night my husband and I took shifts sleeping with her in the loungeroom, on the 3rd night, after not much sleep, we gave up and put her bed in our room and from then she's been sleeping just fine! We've had her for just under 2 weeks now, she goes to the toilet outside, with no command from us. She eats, is great with little kids. The only issue we're having is the teething. She nips at my husband and I alot but she's just excited and in pain. Sometimes she'll come and sit next to us and we can rub her gums and she settles right down. She has heaps of toys to keep her busy and she is already sitting. Its hard not being able to take her out to many places and she wont be fully vacinated until July so on the weekends we take her to our parents place, who live on a big block, and let her run around then. This seems to settle her while we're at work during the week. I'm in love with her and we've bonded so much. What an amazing and loving breed of dog. In terms of training, I would say never strike your pup, they dont respond well at all. We gave her a light tap on the nose once and never again. everytime she bites us too hard now we hit the floor with a rolled up newspaper and say "no" in a dominant voice and she really responds to that. Its a fine line but so long as you reward them for all the good things they do (they're amazing) they'll learn quick enough. In terms of her not coming to you, have you tried treats?? they work a treat on our pup who, at 7 and a half weeks old, is sitting and staying on command. hold a treat in your hand under her nose so she can smell it then slowly walk back as she's coming to you and make sure you are constantly telling her "come". stop her and then continue and when she repsonds to the word, reward her with a treat :0 good luck, im sure we'll be talking more :)

Here's a pict of our beautiful pup - she's got the best personality, my husband and I just adore her...meet Chico!! She's 7 and a half weeks and already 4.9kg (I think that works out to about 9.8 pounds??) she's gonna be huge. Chico loves sharing our pillows and sleeping curled up next to us...we love her so much!

Did you research Chow Chow before you got one ? :D
It's one of the most independent breeds out there. It's basically a cat with big teeth

Hello,

I picked my chow chow pup up last week and am in love with him - he's been a sweetheart from the start; sleeps well, toilet trained and has a wonderful personality. We called him Oscar but my son insists on calling him Oz (the great and powerful Oz) and he responds well to both.

Oscar is 4 months old now and we had to start the jabs again when we picked him up last week as unsure if he's had the correct ones - this means we have not been able to take him out walking yet and I am worried he'll not be able to socialise well with other dogs and get use to the lead. I've never had a chow before but use to big dogs (german shepherds) and i know the value of training early. I am open to any suggestions on great ways to train my baby to be a happy and obedient dog.

Will try and upload a picture now. Chico is gorgeous btw! :x :x :x
