Chow Chow X St Bernard

Hi all,
I'm new to chowchow.org and I'm looking for a bit of advice really.
I visited a dog shelter yesterday and there was a gorgeous Chow Chow X St Bernard there, I spoke to the staff and walked him and completely fell in love. The staff explained that they think Jake is about 18 months old but don't really have much information on him as he was found as a stray. He's so loveable and just wants to lick you to death. The man at the shelter advised us that he seems to have more traits of a St Bernard but to just be aware that some more of his Chow side could come out. I naturally went home and researched all about Chows and got such mixed feedback I've been left a little lost.
I was hoping I could get some feedback on what Chow's are really like as pets from someone please?
I also have a 2 year old cat as well which I would naturally be concerned about, does anyone have any experience of introducing chow's to their cats?
Also as Jake is 18 months old is this too late to start socialising him?
Any advice would be appreciated
Abbey
