Hello!

Post by Katjusa »

Hey,

I'm new here and I just wanted to introduce myself
My beautiful red female chow is now 5 months old and she is my first dog. I'm trying really hard and I joined this forum so I could read about others and what problems you might have had. I was also hoping to get some advice.
When I was reading about the breeds and looking for a right dog for me I fell in love with chow chows. Shosha and I live together in an apartment and I'm really proud of her because she doesn't bark as much as she did when she arrived. And my neighbours adore her :D
I read about the socialisation of chows and I really try to introduce her to as many animals, people (children) as possible. But now I have a problem because she likes other dogs so much and would always like to play.
Well, that's it, I think.

Hi there, and welcome. She is a cutie, chow puppies are so cute. And playing isn't a problem....at her age playing is what she does best. Now, stopping playing and going with mom...that could be a problem :)

Hello!!! Welcome to the forum!

Congrats on your new chow chow puppy! She is beautiful!
Wanting to be around people all the time is a GREAT problem to have! It's soooo important to socialize your chow as much as you can... ALL THE TIME! It's great that you are bringing her out and getting her around so she can adjust well to her environment and the people in it! I have a year old Chow and we got him at 4 months... he wasn't socialized well and it took MONTHS of hard work and training to get him used to strangers... the winter came and because I have medical issues with my hips I couldn't take him out as much as I used to and he regressed back into being fearful of strangers and that's now leading into fear aggression. It's a lot harder now because he is older and more sure of himself so to intergrade him with strangers has been a difficult task... but we're still working on it! I have faith in him.
You can't stop bringing her around everything you can because it doesn't take long for a young chow to become fearful if it isn't consistant. I thought my chow was fine because he was used to people and had no idea that it would change within a two month span nor the concequences that we now have because of it.
Sounds like your doing a great job with her... on another note.. you should make sure you bring her to the vets so she can adapt to them and also a groomer if you are not going to do it yourself... (it takes me 4 hours to bath and groom Koda)... their fur gets matted really easily so you have to brush it every day!!! Also, get her used to getting her nails clipped and hair brushed and be consistant with that as well because once you stop, they stop allowing you to do it.

Good luck with your chowbaby!! She is precious!!!

Welcome to the site. Your chowling is absolutely beautiful. What a lovely colour. :D
Chowlings, as Victory says, have playing off to a fine art - they are good at it.
Just keep on socialising her and teaching her that you are the Mummy Person and she is the Chowling and the rules are basically - you say she does! \:D/

thank you for the advice, I feel better now because I was quite worried that ahe enjoys peoples' and dogs' company too much
I already brush her every day and I probably won't be taking her to the groomer at all (I enjoy it too much  ), we've been to the vet a few times and I'm trying to get her used to brushing her teeth as well (she's already lost quite a few of them and it's so much fun watching the new ones grow)

:) No problem!!!

I think she is just precious! It's really not a bad thing at all that she loves people!! It's a blessing! :)
I remember the days when I liked to brush Koda.. he was so tiny that it was calming to do... something I could do while relaxing. HOWEVER!!! They get Big and it becomes hard work! LOL
Koda went through his first BIG shedding.. I believe they call it blowing out their coat and let me tell you... it's a mess. FUR everywhere! You need a good vaccume if you have carpet! I think it would be a good idea to get her used to the idea of a groomer just in case when she gets bigger you have a harder time keeping up with it... but if your sure of the fact that you will love doing this all the time... thats great too!! It will give a lot of time for bonding. :) I wish you the best of luck with your baby! Keep us posted! :)
