16-year old blind chow DUMPED in Spaulding GA kill shelter

Post by Jeff&Peks »

I moved this up from Chows needing a Home so it won't be missed. If anyone wants to rescue him let me know if you need help with expenses. If you want to find the owners let me know if you need help killing them.

I can't find his picture so it might be to late. Last Chance pets today? The place sounds deranged. Take a look at Cappy, Chow Mix, He's a goner tomorrow.

Hi,

I am a member of a blind-dog forum and I received the following message today (with permission to cross post). I am posting it here with the hope that someone can help this poor soul . . . (I live in CA or I would get him myself.)

Thx,

Dina

This one is a real heart-breaker. I just received
word that the owners of a beautiful, BLIND 16-YEAR OLD
CHOW dumped him yesterday at a high kill shelter in
Georgia (the Spaulding County Animal Control Shelter
in Griffin, GA); this shelter still uses the GAS
CHAMBER!!

This poor old fella must be terrified! Can you imagine
how he must feel, after giving 16 years of love and
devotion, only to be dumped unceremoniously at a
horrible, strange, noisy pound where he must sleep,
day and night, on a cold concrete floor, with nobody
to love or comfort him? And then to ultimately
experience his last moments dying in a gas chamber,
never really knowing what had happened to him? It's
just too horrible.

Is there anyone out there who might be able to open
their heart and home to this beautiful, dignified
senior Chow boy? He deserves far better than a gas
chamber death.

Here is a link to his photo:
http://www.oniva. com/upload/ 1159/seniorblind chow.jpg

*** If anyone can help, the phone number to the
Spaulding shelter is (770) 467-4772. *** The shelter
is open M-F, from 10:00am-4:00pm EST.

Please, please hurry, as this sad boy's last day is
September 19 (next Wednesday). His I.D. number is
B07-0498.

If need be, I can try to help you find transport for
him.

All best,
-Emma in Western New York

Let's hope that his abscence means someone took him. God, I hate seeing this crap and being helpless to do anything.

Hi all,

I posted the original thread. This dog's plight kept me up most of the night. I live in CA, but I am willing to do just about whatever I can to help this dog if someone in GA would partner with me. One of the members of my whippet group has offered to help with transportation (she lives about an hour away). The person who posted to our blind-dog group is also willing to help with transportation (she lives in NY.)

What can we do? Having just adopted a blind dog, I can't imagine how this poor dog is coping in a shelter.

If I could have an hour alone with the owners and no witnesses, my dogs would be feasting on an extra meaty stew tonight -- if you know what I mean.

I was posting to this at 10:30 am when I got tied up on a phone call and then had to rush out to a vet appt for my 3. I just ran off and left the post unfinished.

With such short notice there was nothing I could have done. These always seem to come in the day before or the day of their time running out. Spaulding Co, or Griffin GA, is the place that Kevin(for those who remember him) came from.

Even if I got him, I would have to have him shotted in time to go to a kennel on Sunday morning with the other 3 as I am traveling to Canada for most of the upcoming week.

It is a sad case, but no more sad than any other dog who ends up in that hellhole down there or anywhere else.

Also, I don't see any Chow in him, but yellow Lab. Not that it makes him less deserving from any other dog, but I still have Hannah and it turns out she isn't Chow at all either, but Tibetian Mastiff mixed with something else. So unless I can find her a home I cannot take on any more.

All I have as far as my rescue goes, is a web domain, a host and a dream. I still have to get a business license, have the state Ag dept give me a permit or whatever blood they want, and get straight with the IRS. Yes, I play the lottery too, Lord knows having the capital to pay for all of this would be nice.

I think there is some confusion. The 16-year old blind dog is definitely a chow!!! You can see him here:

He is still alive and needs help. If you can't get him, do you have any suggestions re what to do? I know that every dog's case is sad; but one has to start somewhere!

Sorry, the link I clicked on this AM was not that dog, but I was in a hurry and didn't look at all the dogs, just the first one that showed up.

Yes, he is certainly a Chow. But again, not given a whole lot of notice in order to get him. Who has talked to the shelter? One post says he had until the 19th and one said today. Is he still alive or was today his last day?

If I can get him tomorrow then what? I have to get him, get him to a vet in order to kennel him, kennel him for a week and then I am still over how many dogs I can handle. I am just one guy with limited space and resources. Still, I will call them in the morning and get the skinny and try to figure something out.

What kind of evil people can do that?

This is just awful. I hope he can get out.

Sean, please don't feel like we're putting preasure on you, we know you're not set up for many fosters. If there is a way you can get him and kennel him at the vet, please pm me if you need funds for his kenneling or help advertising him (I might be able to get a few rescues up here to cross post his photo).

Seems to be allot of last minute rescues in GA and Sean gets called on all of them there has to be more then 2 people living in GA. I was reading some of the articles on that site allot of gangs and dog fighting going on in that county.

If Sean gets him great but he's leaving, the Chow will have to be kenneled. Except for not getting gassed, Kennel or shelter to a blind Chow isn't going to be much different he still has no idea what's going on, that Chow needs some kind words and reassurance. Plus I know if Sean pulls him then everyone will say ok the Chows safe and that will be the last anyone says about it, Sean already has 3 and has driven all over GA rescuing more at the last minute. He doesn't have the 200 acre, lush property with the running streams and waterfalls for the rescue yet.

My plan today was to get mine to the vet which I had scheduled for a few weeks now. I had scheduled myself off to get this done, otherwise I will never get a free moment to do it. They need a kennel cough especially since I board them so often. So I took all 3 in to get various stuff UTD. I only saw this post as I was getting ready to take them to the vet and then I got a business call about some shizzle that was left over from yesterday. I had hoped that I would be let off the hook and it looked that way. If that had been the case then I was going to follow up on this guy when I got back. But after leaving the vet, I had a bunch of messages and it was clear they weren't going to let it pass until next week. It was 1 pm and I have to head into Buckhead. There was just no way I could make it down to Griffin with the time left.

To top it off they still didn't send the right stuff so the trip into town was a bust.

I had 15 minutes this morning to make a decision, it meant life or death for this Chow and I blew it. I should have blown everybody off and went and got this boy

I am very sorry everybody...very , very sorry.

Oh Sean, please don't apologize, you have nothing to apologize for. You didn't do anything wrong, I really hope you know that. You didn't blow it!!

In the original post it says he has until the 19th, so maybe a rescue will still have time to get him out.

Don't beat yourself up! First, you can't be in two places at one time. Second, this 16-year old blind Chow is still alive! He isn't scheduled to be taken to the gas chamber until Wednesday (September 19). So far, people in GA, NE FL and New York have offered to help with transportation and people on this board (including me) and on a whippet board to which I belong are offering financial assistance. All we need is for someone to pull this dog out of the shelter.

Even if the only thing we can do for him is to bring him to a vet for humane euthanization, that is still better than dying by gas.

(Although I'd like to think someone can give him a home for the little time he has left.)

There are a few different rescues that specialize in giving disabled, elderly dogs a place to live out their lives, I will see if I can find some info on a few. There has to be a rescue or foster home or forever home somewhere for a 16 year old chow.

Sean, one person cannot save them all, especially with states like Georgia where pet populations are out of control, and shelters are poorly run. Ohio is much the same way. You can't pull every chow in Georgia, Luanna can't pull all the chows in Ohio, Larry and Terrnia can't pull all the chows in Michigan, it's just not possible for one person or one organization to pull all of them, but there are a many rescue down south, someone else may be able to take this one.

Sean, I called this Shelter this morning and orginally thought the Blind Chow was the one to get gased today. The other one, Cappy was the one whose time was up but he was adopted.
The girl I talked to said that the Blind Chow was alive and had until the 19th. I started asking about you because you live in the state and I know you do rescues. I ADMIRE you for what you have done and continue to do. I think your AWSOME. Like Katalin said, you can't save them all and you can't be in two places at one time. I was just trying to think of who was closest and when I think rescue and Gerogia I think of you first......can't help it
I am 7 1/2 hrs away and willing to help with transport or financially. There has to be another Rescue somewhere that would take him.
Sean, you didn't blow anything.....its awsome that you try
