We used to live in Ft Lauderdale.
If you happen to get transport set up ,there's a pretty black male in the Miami Dade county hell-ter (that place is a nightmare),
maybe someone can pull him before it's too late.

This DOG - ID#A1143711

I am a male, black Chow Chow.

The shelter thinks I am about 1 year and 7 months old.

I have been at the shelter since Mar 29, 2009.

This information is 1 hour old.
Back For more information about this animal, call:
Miami-Dade Animal Services at (305) 884-1101
Ask for information about animal ID number A1143711

I contacted Miami-Dade Animal Services regarding ID#A1143711, he is not available until April 4th, we are going to go down tommorow late am or early afternoon to meet & possibly put a hold on him.

There are 2 other chows there that we are also going to meet

Id#A1141280 name Prieta female approx 13 months been at shelter since March 21, 2009.

Id#A1144506 name Duke male approx 1 yr old, been at shelter since April 1, 2009.

Who knows, we might come back with an entire family.

I have had chows for 14 yrs, lost the 1st Rambo at approx 14 mos to leukemia, our current boy is named Rambo II, and is 12 years old, still thinks he's a puppy. He gets along well with all other dogs and our 5 parrots. Will post pics soon.

Will post updates.

I typed this all out on Sat to post it, but when I submitted it..forum software was being updated :(

Update...Friday 04/03...Nightmare begins...had to work late, so got a late start.

Put almost 300 miles on the car & 5 hrs total travel time round trip & didn't even get to the shelter. :?

Yahoo maps left out an important turn on the route...ended up way south of the shelter, called the shelter to get directions..they told me to get back on the turnpike & told me what exit to look for...turned out the road is not accessable either north or southbound from the turnpike...grrrrr.

Saturday 04/04...made it to the shelter via I-95. :D
Dog was still in lockdown(secured area), not allowed visitors. The staff was very helpful to us, they introduced to the facilities manager. After I explained that we had 430+ miles & 7.5 hours of time invested, to come see him, she took us, herself, back to see him. He is much prettier than his pic. Speaking of which I tried to take some & the camera decided not to work. He is still in lockdown, due to his intake evaluation of "Fearful".
(I will go into more detail later)

Now for the good news...We have a hold on him and will pick him up Monday 04/06, between 4 & 6pm after he is neutered. \:D/

 That is wonderful news!! How exciting and I hope Rambo II will show him the ropes and ease his fears (if he is indeed fearful, it may just be the stress of being in the shelter). Congrats! I can't wait to see pics and bless you for taking the long ride to adopt your new best friend.

Just in case you are looking for a female for him to play with (I think I read that you were going to look at the chow mixes they also had while you were there), there is this lovely girl on craigslist. The post says she needs a home by 4/5 or will go to animal control. Maybe you could inquire while you're there (I'm not sure if it's the same exact shelter you'll be at though).

update....sorry about the delay but we have had our hands quite full ...

He is now HOME! =D= WE named him Wolfgang (Wolfie)
We picked him up Monday 04/06. We got home just before dark. He thought he was king of the hill, he just kicked back in the back seat & laid there looking out the window the whole 3 hr trip. Took him into the backyard & left him wander while we sat there & watched him, talking to him & petting hime when he allowed us to. It took all of an hour, for him to become himself, a sweet, lovable adorable puppy! :D Shirley went in to take a quick rinse off to get rid of the road dust, was gone all of 15 minutes. She came back outside, he saw her, & went nuts..he ran up to her, tail wagging & held high, and then proceeded to show her all his love, as only a chow can, rubbing his head on her legs, arms & trying to hug her, then to her & my surprise, he started giving her puppy kisses!!!!! He has totally gotten over being "Fearful" with us, however he still shys away from other people. My good friend & neighbor has been coming over everyday since we got him home, and stays for about 30-60 minutes, Wolfie is getting better about shying away from him. He is still "fearful" around our other dogs. We currently let them see each other without barriers & leashed, for 5- 10 minutes each day, to let them gradually get used to each other. We can't do the normal, supervised introduction, due to the fear factor and him just being neutered (no running for 10-14 days). Rambo gets excited, barks and wants to play, Wolfie tries to get away, the more he tries to get away, the more Rambo barks. #-o
We have divided the house in half, for right now. Wolfie will sleep in our room one night with us, and Rambo & Bella have the run of the other half of the house. The next night, Rambo & Bella sleep in our bedroom with Shirley and I bunk in the guest bedroom with Wolfie, so he is not alone. Alternating this routine nightly eliminates any jealousy or any feeling alienated.
I get home from work, Wolfie greets me at the door, I spend about 10 minutes with him, then spend 10 minutes with the other two. Then I take Wolfie outside to the backyard and spend about an hour with him. Then bring him into the house, let the other two out & spend about an hour with them also. They can see each other thru the screen doors & we keep the bottom open approximately a half-inch so they can investigate each other without anyone overreacting & getting hurt. They seem to be adjusting quite well to each other this way..less barking & less backing off. Next post will be Wolfies history as I promised.

Wolfies history (more detail as promised)...

03/29...Intake to Miami-Dade Shelter as a stray, after being captured by the FHP in conjunction with animal control ON THE TURNPIKE!! Resulting in his evaluation of being "Fearful" Gee...just driving the turnpike is enough to traumatize me! #-o Imagine being only 18 months old, 14 inches high, with only your four legs & instincts to protect you from 1/2 to 8 ton iron monsters whizzing past you at speeds you can't even begin to comprehend & blowing their horns. :(

He did have a collar with rabies tag & leash attached. They contacted the clinic that issued the tag & got hold of the owner. Owner stated wasn't familiar with the area & would have friend get him there to pick Wolfie up by 04/03. He was a no show.

04/04..we were escorted to lockdown to see him...location was the row of kennels furthest from offices & adoption viewing. As we walked down that row, we noticed it was all large dogs with scars & open wounds..it hit me with a sudden realization, he was on Deathrow! where all the unadoptable dogs that were either brought in as strays, confiscated as being fighters, etc. Condemned because he is a chow!
We put a hold on him.

04/05..received a call from shelter, confirming our adoption pickup for the next day.

04/06 2:45pm..I called the shelter to make sure nothing had changed about our adoption. They double checked the records and confirmed he was ours if we still wanted him. \:D/ (apparently they called the owner..who stated he no longer wanted him.) We couldn't get the car ready for transport fast enough to get on the road. The staff seemed to be as excited & happy (if not more) about our adoption as we were. We ended up with a total of 3 staff members assisting. We were only 50% done with paperwork when a second staff member brought him out, then the facility supervisor also came out and spent time with us. =D= =D= :D

04/08..took him to our vet for intake exam.He was wary but not as fearful as he had been when we first met him. he was 38 pounds on 04/06...he now weighs 38.6 pounds. He still has to grow into his paws. I explained to the vet,the way we handling his integration into the family & resocialization & he agreed it was the best way to do so.

He is a mix, but predominantly chow, top of his tongue is pink with blue/black spots toward the back and the botton is blue/black,looks like a lab mix if you know what to look for(and you have to look real hard)..his nose is slightly narrower, tail is longer altho he does carry it like a chow and he has a few white hairs on his chest where a lab would have the white blaze.

And the rest is now history as stated in my previous post. I will try to make daily updates as to his progress of integration into the family & re-socialization with other people.

Sorry about the delay, puter decided to take a vacation. :? And Rambo developed severe hip displexia rather suddenly #-o (methinx (and his vet) it was brought on by him trying too hard to be a puppy again like Wolfie) the two are inseparable. O:)

Wolfie is adapting very well and has integrated himself completely into the family. He is now a whopping 62 lbs ! =D= and he still has yet to grow into his paws. If I can upload the pics correctly..well a pic is worth a thousand words

Wolfie is a very big boy and so handsome. This is such a wonderful story. Thank you for being such a good person to give this boy a chance. He would most probably not be alive today but for you and no one would know what a great chow boy they had missed. He is so lucky to have you. I really enjoyed hearing his story and his progress. :D I hope Rambo is alright too.
