Brown sticky stuff around and in ears?????

I just discovered a brown sticky substance around and in my chow chow's ears. I think it is just ear wax, but am not for sure and am wondering if I clean his ears like I clean my own or am I supposed to do something different? Thank you for the help.:

if there is an infection a vet visit is indicated. I clean my boys ears myself with a solution i get at the pet store, minerial oil and lanolin i think.... he likes to get it done...sometimes..

i use a soultion i get at petsmart.. instrucions say to pour a lot in the ear , i do not do that , i use some on a tissue , some on a Q-Tip ,, chow hates getting a lot of stuf in his ear , but liges nothing better than someone sticking a finger in his ear and rubbing , lots of snorting and leaning goes on ,

See the vet! Most likely an infection. The only way to get rid of an infection is meds from the vet.

She is right, don't poor the cleaner from the store directly in the ear, use a cotton ball.
