Does your chow spend a lot of time in out the sun? If so, it's quite normal for a black coat to turn red. It can also be a sign of malnutrition, or it could simply be a genetic trait, but yes, I think it would affect you in the show ring to some degree. ( I don't show so can't say for sure) - but your breeder should be able to tell you that.

Hi, I have a black bitch who went quite rusty when she was changing from puppy to her adult coat. I used a slicker and groomed a lot to remove the old fur.

I find my bitch will get a rusty chest if I let her dribble after drinking so I try to keep her dry and will wipe her mouth if I notice she is getting damp after drinking.

Hope this helps.
