What type of shavers are the best for Chows?

I'm just looking to even out my 14 month old Chow mixes coat and am looking for a good shaver to use..
His hair is long on his tail and bottom so sometimes poop can get stuck. Would like to know what other people use for shaving. I'm a little nervous taking him to a groomer. Don't know how he'll react. DO NOT want to shave him down, just trim and even out. Any ideas on what shaver to use? Brands? cost? etc.....Thanks for any help. JJ

You could clip around the area with scissors. That works well, and you won't have to invest in clippers.

I am not shaving my dog but I am using a 7inches shear to cut her hair short.

You don't shave them, you use shears to trim the hair and a good combing out and brushing. Also a good strong blower to use when they blow their coat. They always shed though in matter how often you brush.
