Frequency of brushing?

Frequency of brushing?
Hi guys,
I was wondering how often you brush your chow chow. I have been brushing Nala twice a week but now i have increased it to every second day because there just seems to be so much fur!!
Are there any of you out there that dont have chows for showing but brush them every single day? When I was brushing her twice a week there weren't heaps of knots or too much messy hair but I had to brush her for a long time and while she was very good and doesnt mind being brushed, it sure does hurt my arm doing it for two hours or so....
she has a nice coat and i would like to keep it that way. Just curious as to how often you guy's brush your chows?
Also - how often do your chows get gunk in their eyes? Nala has some quite often so i have to clean it with a flannel quite regularly.
So basically, is brushing your chow a daily task? or does it just depend?
