Fleas and grooming help!!

Post by xxladyredxx »

So my dog (bear) got really bad fleas.. He's pulled his hair all out and his skin is all skabby.. I gave him a bath, but its hard to clean him and get all the fleas off. He's about 11years old, and his hair is all matted. I want to get him looking good, and get all the fleas off of him. He spends most his time outside, so he gets dirty quick and fleas easily.
If I take him to the groomers and then comb him everyday, well that get his fleas gone, and keep his hair looking good? or does he need to eat certain foods? Should i keep him inside more? He loves being outdoors though... help!!!!! I want to keep him flea free and looking good..

If Bear lives in a flea infested area, he needs a treatment.
First, to get the fleas off of him asap, I would give him a Capstar pill (http://www.capstar.novartis.us/index.htm). It will kill all the fleas on him.
Then he needs a treatment against fleas, you need to buy a flea repulsive like Advantix (http://www.advantix.info/) and you'll need to give him the treatment every month.
You also need to treat your home as the fleas do not all live 24/7 on your chow, some live where he sleeps in your home. You need to spray those areas (in exemple, use one of these sprays http://www.mikalo.com/boutique_us/liste ... g_us&num=3 ).

If Bear has scabs on his skin, he might have a bacterial infection due to all the chewing he's done on his skin. You might need an antibiotic treatment to clear those and only a vet can diagnose that.

About his matted fur, Bear needs to be brushed and combed, and if you cannot get all the mat untanggled, you will need to cut them. The mats contribute to an unhealthy skin and need to be taken care of.
If I take him to the groomers and then comb him everyday, well that get his fleas gone, and keep his hair looking good? or does he need to eat certain foods? Should i keep him inside more?
If you take hime to the groomers and then comb him everyday, it will give him a unmatted coat, but you will still need to treat your chow against the fleas (and don't forget to treat your home too right now). There is no need to keep him more inside, but if your garden is really badly infested, you might want to look at a solution to treat your garden as well.

Good luck!

The Capstar that Coco mentioned works fabulously and then you should use Advantix or Frontline. These are not like the regular topical fleas powders and such. They are fantastic.
Coco - perfect answer.
