Hair, there and everywhere!!

Post by Clockman »

Ok, the winter shed is ON!!! I vacuum almost every day, groom her almost every day and still I fur flying everywhere. I used the Furminator once and it did well, but she wasn't crazy about it. It does pull, but she'll put up with whatever I do to her (for her). I was thinking of using a vacuum grooming attachment we used to use on the horses, but was wondering what everyone else is doing at this point.

She lets me vacuum her with no problem, but the dusting attachment doesn't get in deep, so the loose hair isn't completely gone.

I'm trying to brush Molly almost every day. She is itchy, too, so I want to give her a bath with a soothing shampoo when I get a chance. She has some dandruff...I just need to make the time to give her a good washing. Maybe that would help get rid of some of the loose fur, too.

Well, washing makes things worse for me! I put her in the tub and use a shower hose to wash her. Trouble is, not much hair rinses off. As she dries, however, more hair starts to come out. She's going to the groomer's on Wednesday, so she can be their problem for now! I'm looking into a vacuum attachment, so we'll see how that does. Have a good holiday, Chris.

Letting the groomer handle it sounds like a plan to me. One idea though is taking her to one of the do it yourself bath places usually found in some pet supply stores. Ours has a forced air dryer that blowssssssss the hair out. It works wonders! I have one who doesn't do well at the groomers so that is my trick with him. I do drag hubby with me though because 4 hands and 2 dryers (or one dryer one brush) going at once is much faster.

I've switched over to two new brushes and they work great! The first is an undercoat brush with long and short tines. It looks like a rake and goes through her fur quickly and easily. The second is a pin brush (or slicker). Some gentle parting and comb-out does the trick.

The groomer did fantastic, but thought I hadn't been brushing her! She said it's been a late season for everyone, so I'm not alone. Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Scarlet sheds enough to make a whole new chow. As she walks you can almost see the fur fall. I have tried different brushes but will try an undercoat brush mentioned by clockman. Hopefully that will make a difference.

Hi,
I've just rescued Koko..you might have read some of the blogs from her rescuer on here. I've had a chow chow mix before and I know about the fur loss and finding it everywhere. However, over the past few days I've noticed that Koko is really losing lots of fur. She is almost without fur in some spots. She is not scratching nor does she appear uncomfortable. I know Stephanie had her to the vet just before I got her 3 weeks ago and there was nothing wrong with her. I'm hoping it might just be from her poor nutrition before being rescued? She isn't fond of getting brushed but she is tolerating it for short periods each day. Should I be concerned or will her winter undercoat come in and restore these bare patches? Maybe I should take her to my vet...I hate to put her thru that since she is just getting used to me and is still pretty scared of strangers. Any thoughts you'd like to share will be greatly appreciated!

Koko still has a lot of potty issues...still prefers to go in the house rather than outside on a leash. She really seems to get frightened after she goes...won't even come to me for a treat...I have to throw one to her. Other than that she is a wonderful dog getting more and more comfortable with us each day. We really love having her here and hope she soon forgets all about her not-so-good other life!

Violet,
Blowing the coat shouldn't leave bare spots. What do the bare spots look like - red, irritated, or just bald? Even though it might stress her, a vet visit sounds like it's needed. If the area is red, irritated - it could be a hot spot.
We've had our rescue mix, Shiloh for close to 6 years now and sometimes she still won't take a treat from our hand - we have to toss it and then she'll take it. She stil has some wierd reactions to some things one day and the next it's no problem :?

Just been searching on shedding. Winston is 11 month and in Australia, currently in Autumn and this is his first shed. I never realised a chow drops a summer coat for his winter coat so all new. As most of these posts are in oct-dec this was all based around the US Autumn so I feel better.

He is looking smaller for a smooth chow and yes we are still vacuming daily as the fur balls are rolling around
