Dremel users?

Post by fillyok »

I'm thinking about buying a dremel to use on Bear and Tod's nails. Samantha has to be done at the vets and Ping must chew hers because they're always pretty short. Anyway, I was wondering what kind/brand/type people use. Do you use cordless? Anything special? Where did you purchase yours? Thanks

i use a cheap[20$] freds no name moto tool with a flex shaft ,,be sure and use the sandpaper drum not a grinder..
in some ways its a hassle,, the front feet go ok but when i do the back ones he lets his tail droop and the hair gets caught in the flexshaft, sand drum drive wheel and wraps all around it jams it up ,, when that happens he just sighs really big and then kicks me in the head like a stallion ..he has knocked head over teacups doing that ..
i ordered one of thos petacure things one sees on the info mercials , it is cordless and has a sheild.. not arrived yet so i can not comment much on it..

petsmart has mremels specila for nail , i never examined them ,, as i said, i am using the cheapest freds moto tool , if you do not know freds Store its about two levels below K-mart which i think rates lower than walmart..
buyt is a step up from the dollar store.. thats where the folks in town on tight budgets go ,, we well to do go to freds ,, the best we have..
heh
michael
ps if you hold off a while i will evaluate the product on order , the one shown on TV is the little one [ petite] and i opted to go with the bigger one [ the elete] costs more..

thanks Bubba. I read some reviews on the one you bought (not Fred's) and they were mixed..some liked it, some didn't. I also noticed most people waited a long time for theirs to arrive. I'll hold off buying anything until I hear from you and others.

I use a Dremel on Molly because that's what they used at the rescue. I ordered it from a catalog but can't remember which one. Like Bubba said, it sometimes gets caught in her fur and then has to be untangled. Otherwise it works quite well. We do give her treats to eat while we're doing it. She doesn't stay very still if we don't.

I use a cordless dremmel on M&A. It works great! I got it from Cherrybrook.com If you join their mailing list then wait you'll get a coupon for 10% off as well :D I was very scepical but Millie was outta control scared by having her front paws done & that wasn't acceptable to me. We tried everything but the dremmel has been the best conclusion for us.

I use both a battery powered and a corded both are dremal brand that you can buy at a hardware store. I always trim the fur first before duing the nails to cut down on it getting in the wheel.

I read on one site that they put an old pantyhose on the paw and poke the nails through the hose so the fur doesn't get caught. This might require some Jack Daniels for me with my pack...panty hose and dremels...it's a party! \:D/ I do have a dremel that I bought years ago. I'll have to dig it up in the garage and try it out on Tod...he's the only one that won't hate me forever. I'm supposed to use the sandpaper drum covers only, right? I heard the buffer wheels and stuff can really get hot and hurt the paws. And only do a couple seconds per nail, alternating nails and paws?

If you will trim the hair from between the toes there should little proplem with this. Yes you want to only use a sanding drum I do not alternate but only do a little at a time as it will get hot. I start with the front then do the back. My guys are taught from a young age to allow this. I start with them when their nails are hard enough. I would say about 6-7 weeks before that I will only use small nail clipper and will have the dremal running while doing the feet so that they will be used to the noise.

I saw the infomercial nail thing and was wondering if it actually worked well or not. Tess chews her nails so has never needed one...Fiona's nails seem to be fine also, but my collie's get very long and she has to be muzzled for us to trim them. The cats are a whole other story. Three people, two towels, then a whole box of bandaids and antiseptic.

I use a no-name (forgot the name) battery driven dremel and it works fabulously.

Ok, the kids don't love it, but they don't hate it.

I would love to hear about the "Peticure" advertised on tv.

i thought about getting one but have heard mixed reviews.

I have the Peticure Safe Guard, which is an attachment for your rotary tool. Its pretty good. I had trouble using just the Dremel before (I wasn't very good at it; would end up filing my fingers, instead of the dog's nails), but this has had made it much easier.

The Safe Guard is just the cap that you see on the end of the Peticure, screws right into the Dremel and allows me to hold the grinding end of the tool in the palm of my hand, for a lot more control while filing the nail. So, yeah, I'm a fan.

If you already have a Dremel that will fit the Peticure Safe Guard, I would highly suggest it, I think it cost me about $20. For me it was more attractive than dropping $50 - $60 on the Peticure (I too have heard mixed reviews about the product).

Just my two pennies.

Have you seen the infomercial for peticure (I can't remember the exact name but it's something like that)?
Have you heard or read anything about that? I was considering it but haven't gotten around to researching it yet.

yes ....news
there are 2 different toe nail things available on net .. one cheaper , one more expensive .. i ordered the more expensive one.. the cheap one comes with a fur comb.. ..
analysis

the one advert is the petite .. for chow one will want the elite. cost more.. then i got a sack of grit wheels , extra cost .. was upwards of 80 $.....altogether
well... the shield is EXCELLENT... if one goes to the website one can procure the shield for 20 $.. keeps hair out of the drive works and contains the ground nails .should fit on any? most moto grinders. the device is naught more than a cordless moto tool ... works good..

so the economy minded would get the shield assembly for 20 $ and find the moto tool of choice and combine ...

the thing is no more than a cordless moto tool with sand grinding wheels and the shield assembly .. t

best bet is to buy the cheapest cordless moto tool found ,, get the shield assy from the source [which should fit on most/any moto tool ] ....

i standing by for more questions ... the shield is a good thing ... contains all the ground off nails ,, they are hell on the lungs and the dust on floor whatnot ...

Mr. B,

What about the noise? Is it sharp or bothersome... maybe like the sound of a battery operated toothbrush or a sonicare... or sharper?

Thanks...sounds like you just saved me $60-80. I'll order the guard and try the dremel out. Therkenham said it works on the regular dremel. After getting a nice bloody scratch from Tod's nails yesterday it reminded me I needed to ask about this... #-o

Reminds me of an old joke...bear with me...

A city fella buys a farm in the sticks, closest neighbor is 10 miles. One day a guy drives up in a ratty pickup truck. He welcomes the city fella, and tells him it is cause for a party. The guy in the truck says, "Boy it'll be some party! There will be eating, and drinking, and dancing, and fighting, and some love-making..." The city fella is intrigued, and says, "Sounds like a wild time! Should I wear something special?" To which the man replies. "Don't really matter, only gonna be you and me..."

Yes Bubba, how is the noise, was your boy concerned?

it made the cordless moto tool noise , no so loud , the sand wheels on the nails make a noise too as they sand ..and some vibration,. , i did have a moto tool with a cord with a flexshaft,, not so good because he would droop his tail and get it caught in the shaft, plus i usually have to run him down for this and thus the cordless is much easier ,
He got the moto-tool toe treatment as a young show prospect so he is used to it , I suspect a chow that was not used to it might be ,, hummm whats the word ? Reluctant? to stand for the treatment. ...

its improtant to do a little on one nail , then go to the next, etc and back to the first , too long on one toenail will make it hot and the chow will react .. [ my chow yanks his leg very hard and/or kicks me ,, old chyno would have bit me.. ]
i really need to work on his toes every day or so until i get them short enough then do it every week ,

while i was grinding on the chows nails Mr cat came by and looked at me doing this , i asked him if he would like his nails worked on , he lashed his tail and glared at me . as if to say .. " try if you feel brave and do not mind bleeding from mant wounds..

I used the dremel on my chinabear {passed} after watching a video on the internet. The lady had several dobermans and showed every step to take. Dobies nails are huge too. Then I started walking her every morning and never had to trim the nails again {sidewalk}. The lady across the street has a chihuahua with very long nails and every month she comes over and I do his nails for him.She holds him in her lap and I give her one of those paper mask cause the dust from the nails goes up her nose. I just hold each nail individually and take off the length from the bottom up. But if you walk your chow on the sidewalk or street you will never have to do the manicure thing.

OK, I tried the Peticure - it wasn't as strong as the dremel and therefore took longer. In my case, that's a con.

But, I bought a plug in Dremel brand dremel from Lowes/Home Depot. These are the pros:

- It has different speeds so if you have a long nawil - you can go fast and then slower for just little trims.
- You can use it for other things - it's an actual tool
- There are different attachments, so that you can use bufffers and smaller grade sandpaper for less sanding.
- The different speed also means that you can go at a very low, almost silent speed and ramp up.
- No batteries to run low

After trying a cheap moto thing, a battery operated Dremel brand dremel and the Peticure - just a plain old regular corded dremel worked the best for me.

I actually prefer not to have the guard, because it makes it hard to see. I take the pad and squeeze the nail out and then put my finger on the end of the nail where it grows to absorbe most of the vibration so that the chow feels mostly the pressure of your finger and not the dremel vibration. Also, by having your finger there, you can keep the hair back.

Now, if I could only teach Mia not to try to lick the rotating end of the dremel, we would all be fine.

I have never used the Pedi-Paws, but I have heard they don't work real well. I personally would recommend the actual Dremel brand nail grinder. I use the cordless Dremel sold at PetSmart daily at work. I like it, except sometimes the dogs make me grind my own nails, but there are risks for any of them without covers. I also recommend the cordless version, a lot easier to use it when you're not worrying where the cord is at. I am thinking about getting one for my dogs at home, but I do them at work when ever they are there, so I'm not worried about doing it at home yet.
