need help with my 8 month chow plz

Post by george »

I have a 8 month boy chow this is our second so we know a little about them. He for some reason will not put his tail up unless he wants to which isnt for long we have had it checked by vets they say it is ok and have no idea why he will not do it ! Any ideas or has any one come across this before ? He has also now had 3 eye operations by a specialist to rectiefie his poor eyes and a very nasty ulser) but we think at last this is getting better. Some times when he runs around the bext day he finds it hard to move around on his back legs ! All together he has had lots of problems and has cost the insurance company close to 2k. Our last chow lived to 14yrs with only visting the vets 3 times. If you can shed any light on any of the above i would be most greatfull

Have you checked with the breeder? I know that alot of the difficulties chows have are inherited. Have you checked him for hip problems? The eye problem is pretty common. At least you have the insurance. I would ask the breeder if you can contact other people who may have also purchased from this breeder. Even if the male and female do not have the problems if the female is overbred her babies aren't as healthy. I'm not sure what the law there states about requiring a breeder to inform you of problems but if the breeder knows of problems and didn't inform you I would ask for some money back on the purchase. I'm sure you are attached to him so you don't want to return him. Good luck.

I’m afraid you might have a big problem with this young chow. Firstly not holding up his tail is a sign of nervousness, or it could be a bigger problem he may have a spinal problem and this could also cause the limp he has in his rear legs, of course this could also be the dreaded Hip dysplasia, His eye operations are unfortunately a genetic problem and even though they can be corrected with surgery he could still have on going eye problems, and this may lead to total blindness when he gets older.
If the breeder is not a registered breeder then I am afraid there is not very much you can do, but if they are registered with the kennel Union then I would advise you to contact them and explain the problems of your chow to them They really should not be breeding Chows with such problems, Most Chows here in South Africa, are x-rayed for hip problems and checked out to see that their eyes are clear of entropian, But other then that it is very difficult to know when you buy a lovely little ball of fluff the pain he may have to go through as he grows up.
If these problems really turn out to be bigger then you can manage I would suggest you get in touch with the breeder and say that you would like them to pay towards the Vet’s fees. After all they are the ones that bred a sick puppy and you paid for a healthy boy, not one that has cost you so much in Vets fees.
I am not a Vet but I am a breeder and if it were my puppy I would be very upset to know what is wrong, and I would really offer you a replacement puppy for all the trouble this has caused. Love him for his short life and have him x-rayed as soon as possible.
Kind Regards.

I think chows are susceptible to depression when they have alot of health problems that cause owners to have to submit them to alot of uncomfortable or painful procedures. You have to give them even more attention and reassurance and make sure that they know how much you adore them. I know Maggie's tail goes down when she has blocked *Censored Word* glands. That is the only sign of a blockage. She doesn't "scoot" or do any of the other typical things that other breeds do when they have a blockage. This can also cause a urinary tract infection. As well, if a chow has lots of health issues, their thyroid levels should be checked.
