Post spay, painkiller advice pls

Post by Layla »

I need your advice please. Millie is at the vets for her spay today. This is not my normal vet (they wanted $500 to spay her!) This new vet comes recommended by Millie's eye specialist & other friends. When I dropped her off this morning they asked whether I wanted them to supply post-op painkillers. That seemed normal to me, to my understanding anyway. Then they quoted $35 for it...... Now, I have no problem paying this if the painkillers are going to make Millie more comfortable, that is my prime concern. However, why ask if I needed them? Is this a correct price? The only other times I needed medication from the vet(s) it's been more like $10.

Please can you advise me on this, I just want to do what is right for Millie's comfort & health. Thanks a lot

Well, when Butters was neutered, his painkillers were included in his price, but man what a price. I was gonna go to a cheaper one (but Butters scared everyone there) their painkiller price was about $15.

What is the painkiller? I know some of them are quite expensive. Sometimes, antibiotics are pricey too.

I've never heard of that one. You could ask the vet if there's another one that's less money. Sometimes, unbuffered aspirin will do the trick.

I refused all pain meds for Sheena when she had her spay. I gave them the day before and immediately after the surgery. I used homeopathic remedies only- Hypericum 6x or 6c for nerve damage and Arnica Montana 6x or 6c for the pain, you can use 30x or 30c but I've always gotten better results with the lower dose.

I do the same for myself after any kind of surgeries and literally feel no pain at all!

1/2 dose for animals is 2 tabs alternating every 15 minutes for the 1st hour for acute pain and then same amount alternating per hour for the next 4 hours. Usually you don't need anymore after that. I prefer Standard Brands but Boiron is OK. Some pharmacies carry it as well as health food stores. It will cost anywhere from $13 to $15 plus tax total and you'll have plenty left over for your self and don't need to worry about any side effects.

A woman I know just had a D&C and only took the homeopathy after the surgery and the pain went immediately and is feeling great.

Good luck on what you decide. $500 is a lot for a spay-I was complaining at $150! Much health to Millie and take care.

That is the same med Cinnamon is on. It was recommend by her vet and by her new neurologist. She seems to do really well on them. They allow her to reset more comfortably. Other wise when she is in pain she pace all over the house. If it were for our Cinnamon then see I would get them. Sorry I do not know the price of them? Hope she home now and resting.

Mikki is going to be spayed after April 15th. I had Luna spayed at the same vet 11 years ago. She was fine. I hope Mikki will be o.k. too. She's a vacc reactor. That makes me a bit nervous. She's 3 1/2 years old.

Janet, those Lunas must be tough girls. I had Luna spayed 11 years ago, she was around 2 or 3 years old. She was her usual happy self when I picked her up from the vet's. No e-collar. She left the stitches alone. No painkillers. I hope the same will be in Mikki's case in two weeks from now.

Thanks Janet. I worry because I wouldn't cope too well if anything were to happen to Mikki. I will try, I don't want to transfer my anxiety to the chow. I guess I will keep a stiff upper lip,

When all 3 of mine were neutered/spayed - they sent me home w/ Rymadil, which was included in the price.

Karin: I will keep her in my prayers & hope Mikki comes thru it w/ flying colors. Keep us posted.

Juniper thats the same stuff our homeopathic vet gave us for Irish. He got some the nite before hsi surgery & them for 10 days after the surgery.

3BC: It's great that you have a good holistic vet who administers the correct homeopathy for surgery.:D

Karin: Ask your vet to use Isoflurane as the anesthesia. And do try the homeopathic medicines - hypericum (this is for the cutting of the nerve tissue during surgery and to speed healing) and arnica montana (for the pain)- it really works very well.

I know it's tough to not worry during any surgery-just take a lot of deep breaths and know Mikki will be fine. We're all putting positive thoughts for her quick recovery.

YAY, Millie is HOME!! Sid got Rimadyl. I gave it to him for the first couple of days. LOL.. I asked my Vet, HOW DO I KNOW HE'S IN PAIN, HE CAN'T TALK... LOL.. They just smiled and said "give it to him for the first couple of nights, he'll be fine."...

When I had Jazzy spayed the vet didn't give me any pain meds. Just told me to give her aspirin if she seemed to be in pain. Said it was cheaper than what he could give her.

Also, Juniper, Thanks for the homeopathic remedies. I'm learning, and want to use as many as I can for my Chow and for myself and family.
