Colonel has entropian surgery- Tuesday 3-27
My, my, tomorrow we will have two furkids in the hosptital at once!!!
Colonel's surgery is only a one day, in and out procedure.
My Princess Buttercup (therapy furkid) in a different hopital and is recovering nicely from a nasty bug she picked up in a nursing home.
Keep us in your thoughts, plz!
How about that pet insurance, anyone try that?
With all this expense (a few grand) that we are experiencing in pet care, I have certainly begun to wonder if we should have gotten pet insurance. I don't know anything about it or even if it would have paid anything.
*I should have made "insurance" it own topic. sorry.
Any feedback?

Bama,
Will definitely be thinking of the Colonel tomorrow and your adorable Buttercup as she is recovering. I hope that both have a speedy recovery!
I am curious too to see what feed back you get on the insurance question. I have considered it for Naomi, but didn't know if it would be worth it in the long run?

Sending healing thoughts your way!!
Re Insurance & Jeff: I think he did for a long time, then he quit, then Pekoe was diagnosed with cancer.... if my memory serves me right, can be rather rusty, I do have my senior moments....
Leo's problems came up before we got her insuarance. Is a good idea if coming up w/ a grand or 10(! God forbit!!)is a temporary shock to the system. My guess is unless it covers for cancer, you only break even at best over time. It seems like not all insurer covers for genetic problems and the ceiling per annum per ailment is quite low...

With 5 dogs, I have considered that too, I had a summer where I had to take Maya in to be treated for bastomycosis. About 200.00 a week for medicine and then later to have her eyes removed. I have a dog fund that I throw in a certain amount and leave it there. Insurance will only reimburse your for about 80% of the bill. By setting up your own insurance you get the full benefit of your money It is a risk, you may pay 300.00 a year for insurance and never use it or you may have to use more. For me It is easier and cheaper to set up an individual dog account for medical care that isn't routine than pay insurance for 5 dogs.

Good luck with the surgery tomorrow.
I don't think the insurance would have covered His eye surgery, I belive the insurance company makes you go for a physical type thing to make sure there are no pre-existing conditions. It may be a good idea for the future though.
One last thing, our chow had entropion surgery last fall. I think I should prepare you, Colonel will look not look the best (Im sure you know this). I was not prepared for the way our chow looked after the surgery. We had our regular vet do the surgery so a specialist will hopefully do a cosmetically better job right out of surgery. I am not trying to scare you, but just a heads-up on what He MAY look like. I think it was much worse for me to look ate Her than it was for Her.

Millie has pet insurance with VPI and it's 10% co-pay with a $60 deductable per condition. That should mean that they will lump all the x3 episodes of puppy tacking and the final surgery together as one condition event. Unfortunately, they take 45 days to decide on a claim....... So we are still waiting to hear if they will pay out We took out the insurance before she had the problem but you never can tell if they really will can you. I'll let you know!
Thank you Elodie!

Dear Colonel,
You will be just fine and still look beautiful. You have to get well really fast so that you can help to take care of Princess Buttercup.
Big hugs and kisses,
Auntie Sharon, Uncle Alan and cousins JR and Cheyenne
P.S. I had a Himalayan cat years ago{before Chows} and he had the surgery and did really well and looked fine...Sharon

Millie here Colonel, I requested the biggest dinner and ate it all (it was yummy sardines ) thanks for the tip on that one, I hate when they don't feed me. Best of luck tomorrow and I'll be checking in to find out how you got on. I'm pretty nervous myself, I don't like it when they leave me at the vets on my own
Thank you Elodie!

We are getting ready to go across town and pick up Colonel.
Mark (hubby) dropped him off this morning for entropian surgery. Doctor said both corneas were scratched a bit with some pigmentation. The pigmentation may actually clear up with time. It appears that we are having this done just in the nick of time, before heavy scratching of the cornea occured.
I am waiting by the phone!
Mille,
How you doing? Are you home yet? Did you have any scratches or pigmentation?
Good luck...we'll bark later!

Well, how is he doing today??
I logged on just to see how COLONEL was doing. Please let us know how he is!
I don't know what else he will need but entropian is almost always not covered with pet insurance. But we can talk about that later.. I feel for ya though, Darn Chowbabes are like kids...too bad we can't take a tax deduction for them..Ha ha.
I sure hope he is doing ok and little sister too! I've been thinking about you today so keep us posted!
Hugs!!

Mark is on his way right now to get Colonel!
Spoke to the doctor on the phone and she said everything went well and that he is waking up right now.
So, we should have him home around 6:30 pm tonight.
Colonel's sister, Buttercup has me concerned a bit, she's not snapping out of this as quickly as I would like.
She is not much interested in drinking, but I'm getting her to lick some water off my fingers. Then I drop my finger into the water bowl to trick her into drinking a slurp.
She is eating, I feed her a few bites every two hours.
She is beside me on the bed, where we have been all day.
If there is no improvement by tomorrow, I'm taking her in for IV fluids. She is only 3 years old, but rescued from near starvation and a whole host of complications.
I don't believe she has come this far to let go of life now.
