Entropion/Chow Eye Info Needed
I have a big red male chow named Ling who's 10 yrs old good natured loving Chow.
Im pretty sure he has Entropion/Chow Eye disorder for the second time first time he was little more than a year old his eye openings are not as big as my female chow.
Im gonna get our local vet Lock Boyce to do the surgery my question is how long does a chow have to recooperate after the surgery and wear the vets protective collar. Thanks in advance

My chow was fine after five days. The things to be more concerned about are:
1) Getting a proper diagnosis, are the lashes actually scrapping the cornea? Many vets will just take some of the extra skin from the corner of the affected eye and hope that does the trick, without really knowing what the specific problem is. This pulls the lower lid down and away from the eye, which will help with the entropian, but can cause other problems, as they are more likely to get dust and other irritants in the eye, which can cause other problems. If you can afford it, and are near a major center, I would recommend an eye specialist.
2) the anaesthesia - does your vet know that chows need much less that other dogs, but that it takes longer to take affect, thereby making them more likely to be overdosed that other dogs? Even the sedative that they like to use before the actual aneasthesia can cause problems for chows. They can give an antidote for the anaesthesia, but there isn't one for the sedative. Also be sure you are on hand for the recovery, if you are needed. If your chow wakes up cranky, they may not be able to get close enough to your chow to make sure that their vital signs and everything are stable. I suggest the same for spay and neuter procedures.
Good Luck!

Well I took Ling to the vet today and It wasnt entropian chow eye it was far worse he has incurable mouth cancer. Dr. Lock Boyce a caring vet for over 30 yrs said theres a big round cancerous tumor on the roof of his mouth that has caused him to lose weight be more tired etc.,
I asked him what could be done to cure him and he said nothing you could take him to cancer centers for dogs and cost thousands in money and not cure him or make him live another day.
He gave me some pain pills for him and Im gonna give those to him and make however long he has left to live like a king. Dr. Boyce said he could live another 5 to 6 months or longer who knows only God Knows for sure.
If it gets to the point that my baby boy Ling is in a lot of pain Im not gonna let him suffer it will hurt me alot but I will let Dr.Boyce put him to sleep. I have been crying and an emotional wreck this afternoon but Im getting better and Im gonna be there for my Ling.
