how to get an older, stubborn chow into an automobile

Post by brenne »

hello-

my chow chow is about ten years old. for some reason her allergies have been very bad this year; I really want to get her to the vet, but about four years ago she decided she won't get into cars anymore. She's a difficult puppy; she will bite if you push her too far. Not to seriously injure or anything (She doesn't bite, hold on and start shaking, for example), but hard enough to get you to not want to do it again. She needs to see the vet, though. Any ideas on how to get her in the car? Anyone else with similar experiences?

You will need to make the decision on how far to push her, but any chance of baiting her? Other options could be a mobile vet that comes to visit you, or you could try to crate her outside the car and then move her and the crate into the vehicle.

As an aside, if you get to the point where she is in the car, don't always take her to the vet. Sounds like she is associating the car ride with a negative experience. Mix it up and use the car to take her somewhere positive. Dog park, beach, pet store for a new toy, etc.
