Post by Tan160581 »

Hi

I have a 6 month old chow chow and when I got her her eye on the left always been tearing I took her to the vets and they said lower eyelid entropian, breeder telling me she may be allergic to something and give her anti allergy drops as sometimes the kids can turn in, vet said operation but I have read entropian surgery can be bad for a dog so young and it can take 4 years for a chow to grow In to there head, I asked vet for drops who said no op is needed, what is your advice please x

My advice is to take your pup to a doggie ophthalmologist or at minimum get a second opinion. I was told my Chloe needed surgery but when I took her to the actual eye specialist I was told no surgery and it was allergy related and I was given drops.

I agree. A vet that only offers surgery as an option at 6 months old is questionable. Your pup hasn't even grown into her face. Even if entropion is an issue, she may outgrow it. Very common. As others have suggested it may be an allergy or an eye infection.

I don't want to suggest that you wait too long. Entropion can cause the tearing and eye irritation early on and if left uncorrected will result in corneal scratches or eye ulsers. It shouldn't go unchecked, but the best way to determine is with a dye test to check for abrasions to the eye.

Just make sure you are comfortable that the vet has done proper testing. Don't jump into surgery because the vet found an easy/common diagnosis. Make sure that the vet is open to discussion. Again, many, many pups will outgrow a minor eye irritation.

INSIST on an eye drop or salve to help relieve the symptoms while getting a 2nd opinion or to allow some time to see if the issue resolves itself as her growth plates develop.

The operation he is most likely referring to is a tacking operation which is done in puppies to atleast allievate the discomfort while the dog grows... Yes your dog may outgrow the condition but would you want your eyelashes scratching the surface of your eyeball for however long it takes?

And I wouldn't pay much attention to your breeder in my opinion, entropian is congenital therefore is likely a result of bad breeding, of course i can't say this for gospel though..
