Spay/neuter help

Post by Storm »

Hi everyone I was just wondering what ages your Chows got spayed or neutered. Every dog my family has ever had we have had spayed or neutered at 3-4 months old. We just made storms appointment to get spayed in 3 weeks. I am just wondering if there is any benefit to waiting on getting her spayed later?

This is a decision I need to make in a few months. My initial inclination is to wait at least 12 months before neutering my male Chow, but there are slightly different considerations for a female. Here are the links (limit of 3 per post, so others will follow) & excerpts in my notes:

*don’t spay too early "Entire bitches only have a 3.4 % chance of developing mammary cancer, and whilst early neutering reduces this to approximately 0.017%; if spayed after the first season there is still a reduction to 0.27%, with this one factor declining as a “benefit” rapidly thereafter”..IF waiting creates minimal increased risk of cancer, but GREATLY reduces the risk of incontinence, waiting gives you a win/win...spaying carries a significant incontinence risk [does delaying after 1st heat reduce the risk of incontinence? what is that risk in either case?] what are the risks of the actual spaying surgery?
*i also have a coated breed and spay/neuter coats are a total pain to make look nice. they get fuzzy (more undercoat) and the top coat isn't the normal healthy texture without the hormones. [really?]

Thank you very much for the information. So I basically should wait til after her first heat. How long are they normally in heat for? I have never had a dog in heat. I will just need to keep cowboy away for
Her because I don't want Chow Chihuahuas lol

Chowhuahuas or Chihuachows? I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually tries that combination.

I've never owned a female dog, so have no idea about how long they're in heat. And I'm afraid I didn't really follow the pros/cons of early or later spaying. There are some lively online debates about desexing dogs at all. Here are the last few links in my notes:
