Black skin & hair loss

Hi, Ling Ling is 9 years 7 months old. She has been loosing hair on her chest, tail and other areas and the skin is black where the hair loss is. I had blood tests done and results did not show any problems. I know about the thyroid problem because my prior Chow MiLing had it. Vet says it may be stress. I am a little worried. Any ideas about the hair loss and black skin? Thanks

When was the last time Ling Ling's teeth and gums were checked and cleaned? These symptoms are sometimes indicative of oral melanoma; black skin and loss of hair. Sheena's tail was becoming a rat tail and she had more black patches of skin. When my Sheena went in for a dental cleaning after 6 years a melanoma was discovered on the very base of her tongue which would not have been noticed unless she was under anesthesia gas. Dogs w/black tongues have a high incidence of oral melanoma since it is the melanin in the tongue that produces this cancer in dogs-not the sun. In fact, I found out that this cancer was the most common cancer in 30% of dogs! I could kick myself for not getting her teeth cleaned sooner but apparently got it just in the nick of time thank goodness.

Much health to Ling Ling and hope you find out what is going on soon.

Lingling is having biopsy of skin today and teeth cleaned. she has been eating fine and is very playful. I hated leaving her at the vet...she does not like it there. I will post what I find out.

Thanks for asking! Tests for thyroid came back normal again, so vet is sending biopsy (skin) to dermatologist. I am waiting to hear back. She had a cracked tooth, so vet pulled it and cleaned her teeth while she was out. Ling Ling is eating good and as playful as ever. She will be 10 in December. Will let you know when I hear from vet.

So happy Lingling is doing well. Cracked tooth can create lots of problems for a chow. Hopefully everything comes back negative on the biopsy! YAY Lingling!!!!

Has your vet considered Cushings Disease? Black skin and hair loss is one of the symptons.

Yes she was tested. The Vet called yesterday with biopsy results. Skin specialist says it is alopecia x. Ling ling is going to start taking melatonin (5mg) 2 x a day. She has not seemed to have lost any more hair. I hope this works...we live in Ohio and it gets quite cold here in the winter.(LOL) I am glad it is only cosmetic. She and our daughter are the same age (10) and Ling Ling has been one of the best Chows I have had.

Glad to hear. Ling ling is doing better! And thank you for keeping us updated on what it was and what they treated Ling ling with, so many times people come on once and ask and never come back after they find out, information like this helps everyone including our chows so that maybe it helps someone else get to the point quicker and less cost and suffering!
Thanks again!
Nancy

Nancy,
I posted as soon as I saw the improvement. I agree with you...we should all share our information on our chows. I will post more as she grows more hair. Her chest was almost completely bald. It now has hair growing back.

Hi,
This may be due to weather change conditions as well.. if the blood test report is fine then you do not have to worry about it..just take care of your chow chow....

I think this is one of the symptoms of allergies! Why don't you try to ask your vet? Maybe you need to change your dog food to helped your dog back to a normal skin and coating just like before.
