Hair wont grow..? Help Please. :c
Hey there, I have a two year old Blue Chow.
He's never fully blown his coat.
He has this racing stripe of adult hair down his spine and his head and shoulders look great.
But, His sides and little butt just don't grow adult hair if any at all.
He had shoulder surgery in November and he just grew a few fluffy patches of the undercoat but the surrounding area is just bald.
It's not irritated, it's not itchy..He doesn't mind it at all.
When he was just a wee pup we found out we had to deal with his crypt-orchid. His testicles didn't descend out of his chest.. That was his first surgery.
Then his shoulder broke because his growth plates hadn't fully developed and were unusually fragile for his weight of about 55lbs.
So, I'm lead to believe this is just a hormone issue?
He has such a wonderful temperament and I'd hate to give him testosterone if I didn't need to.
All in worries of changing his personality.
But, if it'll help him finish growing than I'm not against it.
Please comment if you have any ideas..or anything really.
I don't know if I should just go visit the vet..?
Thank you.
Jay
P.S. I can post pictures if it would help.

I'd consult a vet.

Post some pics so we have a better idea, but in the meantime, definitely schedule a vet visit.
At 2, he should be fully into adult coat. I have seen blues that develop a lot of silver/grey in their coats and its usually a dietary issue. I don't think testosterone itreatment is a viable choice unless their is a production issue.
55 lbs is not an unusual weight for a male chow at that age, so unless he is particularly small in bone structure, his normal growth should have been able to handle that weight. I would look more toward a lack of protein in his diet.
Think of bone growth and every advice will tell you that they need proteins. Same can be said for healthy coat. Unless their are genetic issues involved, i think you will need to upgrade his food quality...let us know what his regular food is. Consider a partial raw diet. At 2 his growth is likely done, but it can help to solidify his bone density and fur.

It's a good idea to do some raw food along with it.
Thank you, I will call the vet and get an appointment as soon as I can for sure.
I've been looking around for some natural remedies.
p.s. hope those pics turned out right. :s
