Limping - possible blown ACL?

Post by OH Guest »

Hello, I have a 5 yr old Chow that I've had since he was a small pup. Right now he is at the vets (may the Fates save them) getting X-rays, but I'm tons worried about him. He's never had any major health problems before, not stiffness or other limping episodes. He was just limping when I came home from work yesterday. (By limping I mean putting no weight at all on his hind right paw). Has anyone had any experience with this?

I have had that happen a few time's with Pekoe walking around on 3 legs holding her rear or front paw up it always turns out to be something stuck in her paw like a foxtail or small pebble.
If it turns out to be nothing at the vets always check her paws carefully for foxtails its summer now and those things wind up everywhere on Pekoe and sometimes really hard to find.

Rogan has, on several occasions, done this. Always favoring the rear left leg. Our vets, a long time ago, said that he had a bad patella - like luxating patella; I think she may have even used that term. Over the years, we've kept him on suplements and that seems to help, but every once in a while, it comes back to bother him.

Good luck with your baby and keep us informed.

It's confirmed, he ruptured his ACL. Since my vet isn't a specialist, I had to find an orthopedic vet. He has a surgical consult on Thurs. If I like the vet, surg. is deemed necessary, and they can do it, he'll stay at the vet on Thurs and prob. have the surgery on Friday. My poor heathen. I've been researching the two types if ACL repair surgeries offered and neither one is 'easy'. Both have significant recovery times. What is worse is that he has a 30% chance of blowing the other one soon. Plus he loves his walks and refuses to go dookie in the yard, but he will have to be on restriction for at least 3 months. There goes the summer for my poor bear.
