my beautiful girl DOES have Glacomoma -more tests

Post by Teekapoo »

Im so so sad, my poor little 6 year old girl is so poorly. we've been taking her to the vets all week because of her eyes and 2 days ago we got a second opinion and we get some test results back today. When the 2nd vet saw her he said straigh away blue eye desease but as the days have gone on one of her eyes is so swollen and both eyes are completley blue, exactly like all the pics ive seen of Glacomoma and she is completely blind.. Im so upset as she's so poorly and as soon as we spotted anything we took her staright to the vets but now its a week on and she's just got worse and after reading up it sounds like if it is that then the damage is now irraversable.. its just heartbreaking, she's my little teeka-tots....

i put this in the health part too

Think ahead, time to prepare her home to be safe for her disability. Do not rearrange your house. She needs you more than ever now. Leo and Zoey send their best wishes to you.

National eye care group in many states; http://www.eyecareforanimals.com. Teeka needs a specialist; we are so sad for you! I just found their web site, I have been to one of their member clinics in my state, maybe they can help you find someone in your area if there are none of their clinics near you; it is a start. I once read about the disease, it takes a real commitment from the owner, precise medication schedules.

Sorry, for the false hope, I just noticed your location, it is very late here. I hope you can find a specialist in your country.

My Oneill had glaucoma secondary to melanoma in her eye.She lost her sight at 6 yrs also but only in one eye, she had the eye removed and the iop in the second eye still was higher than normal so she did drops. I was totally amazed at how well she did with limited sight in the good eye..She was so much better after she had the cancerous eye removed, it was like getting her old self back again. I hope your chow does okay too! It's not easy to see them go through it.

I have posted this to you on both forums. The end may not so near as the other responder has said, be strong. Her condition as you now describe sounds like the glacomoma progression these specialist describe on their web site in the eye disease section. [-o|

I worked for one of the glaucoma specialist for humans in our area so I knew something was not right and the Vet said it was a corneal abrasion and I knew it wasn't so we went to a vet.ophthalmologist and he diagnosed glaucoma and cancer and started drops immediately even in the cancerous eye to get the intra ocular pressure ( iop) down for relief till he did the eye removal. There are different types of glaucoma, Open angle or closed angle or from trauma, or secondary from disease like cancer, it all depends what the specialist says. our Vet had it all wrong for Oneill, and thank goodness the specialist saw me right away it saved the second eye somewhat. The cost of the visit was not much more than our regular Vet and if it is expensive they can usually work out a payment plan with you.
Good Luck let us know how you make out!

You have to attack this as you would any disease. Once you have the results then make a plan to save her by any means necessary. If she loses her sight then she can still live a full life. My Jr. lost his sight due to health problems but got around just fine. Like wokman said 'dont rearrange anything' their memory is amazing. Jr was able to navigate a large fenced in yard and come back to the house without any problems.

Sending prayers your way.

I remember when you first intrduced Teeka at BTT. This is such sad news. Hopefully you can rebound from this and sweet Teekapoo will have more time than you think. There have been many times on here where visually impaired/blind Chows have gone on to live good lives. I wish this for your sweet girl, too.

I am sorry to hear about your chow's eye issues. However, I want to remind you that loss of sight for a canine especially a well cared for chow, is not as devasting as it is for a human. A canine's two main senses are scent and hearing, sight is third. As long as they can hear, and smell, they can do very well without being able to see. One of my chows was used as a stud before I got him, and one of his daughters was born without eyes, (mom was on doggy birth control and shouldn't have gotten pregnant, but she did) I met this little girl and you couldn't tell at all that she was blind, she was as active, playful and curious as her mom, and sister were.

If they have to remove her eyes, it will mean that she isn't in pain. She's already blind so she won't even notice except for the absence of pain and she won't get infections. It is sad, but it she can still have many, many happy high quality years a head of her.

http://aahvet.com/contact.html

I found this Animal Eye Clinic listed in Madrid, Spain. Forget your current Doctor, this is "@#$@!*#%" Chow discrimination!!!
As the others have said treatment with drops should have been started already.
They may be able to locate a reputable doctor near you, if it is not already too late.

The two following links are a Clinic in England they clearing explain the various forms of her condition.

http://www.willows.uk.net/en-GB

http://www.willows.uk.net/en-GB/special ... thalmology

It is time to take matters into your own hands; she depends on you!
I hope your next post can be good news.

My dogs have suffered in the past from doctors whose diplomas had less value than the paper they use on their back side! It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the whole barrel.

Oh, my goodness. I hope you can find someone to treat her asap. She's in trouble and needs help, and her behavior is how chows show pain. I'd call every vet in the city if I had to to get her help pronto. Poor baby. I am so glad sometimes to live where I do, I have an excellent vet and one or the top Vet teaching hospitals in the nation in my city...I thank my stars for them. I'm hoping you can find the same.

Re: so sad, i think my beautiful girl has Glacomoma - test b

Well the results are back and she doesn't have Glacomonma she actually has Adenovirus known as blue eye disease. The vet is coming in the morning to talk us through it but has said that she has to fight it off herself as there is no cure, we just have to hope now that she's strong enough and that the virus doesn't spread to her brain or kidneys, his last case was last month and the blue eyes and blindness last about a month and then he got his sight back only to have to be put to sleep a few weeks later as it had spread to his brain... So I'm really pleased that its not Glacomonma but she is no way out of the woods yet...

Apparently the disease is more common here bacuase of the amount of stray in vaccinated dogs, makes you wonder why we bother to vaccinate if they can still catch it anyway eh.

Iam glad you finally got results . IAm sure they took blood and that would take longer for results than than a glaucoma test( that takes a few seconds to measure pressure).
I must admit when you said the other Vet said blue eye DISEASE, that's a whole different term..as you are aware of now. I don't think many have heard of it to be honest.I hope your girl has a good speedy recovery, sending well wishes your way.

I understand your vaccine comment I had to re booster Nikki for rabies after she got bit by a groundhog when she just had her shot 3 months before she got bit and I always gave her the right vaccines never missed, but they still re- did the vaccine and quarentined her for 10 days?? So again why did I vaccinate her??? But we do these things to try to prevent diseases .

You may have to go to petmd.com main site to find and read the article. Owning a dog is difficult in Spain, all kinds of dangerous situations. Pet owners must keep up with all required vaccinations. You will soon know what you are dealing with. I will now remember "Know before you go when taking your pets to a new location."
You will do what is best for her. The other responders to your post were right too wish the best for you and your fur girl and not try to be online doctors, i.e. Zoeys' and Leos' leash handler and dish washer.

I am so sorry to hear the news that this is not something that can be cured quickly and easilly. Sending hope and prayers that she can beat this. I am so sorry you must be so worried. Take some deep breaths and do what has to be done and the rest is in the hands of the gods as they say. Please keep us updated on how she gets on.

Reading your post brought tears to my eyes. :( I feel so bad for you and your furbaby. Both of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our fingers and paws are crossed and I'm praying the vet will be able to help her and she'll have the strength to overcome this nasty virus.

Please keep us posted.

Try to think positive thoughts

Take Care

i wish i had a miracle post to make this easier, but obviously i dont. after reading each entry into your post, i am frustrated with the inconsistent diagnosis's and lack of accurate answers. i have experienced health issues with my boys, but still cant begin to appreciate your situation. i can only hope for the best. prayers are with you and your girl.
