Intermittent limp

Post by Confuzzled »

Hi, new here, but I'm going to jump right into it.

My Chow is just under a year old, and she's developed a limp in her left back leg, but its not all the time. Every now and then she will hop with this leg in the air for a few seconds. We'll grab her, poke in her paw pad, between the toes, all the way up her leg, along her hips and nothing. No reaction, no sign that pressure is creating pain anywhere. And then she'll run off and play like nothing happened. Give it a few hours, or a day and this "5 sec limp" is back. She's been doing this on and off for about 2 weeks now.

I haven't taken her to the vet, because I'm not really sure what he will do. Chances are that she won't have her limp at the time of the visit, and seeing as how extensively poking and prodding doesn't yield any reactions from her, he won't be able to isolate where the problem is either.

A few months back she sprained a toe on her front right paw taking a corner too quick, but that resulted in a constant limp. She came straight into the house, got on the bed, and refused to get up again. This is not that at all. It's like it only sort of bothers her, sometimes, but mostly she doesn't even notice anything.

Could I put this down to "growing pains" or is there something else that could make a puppy limp randomly like this?

I am very interested in hearing any answers regarding this post. My 11 mo has started doing exactly the same thing!

Sounds very much like an ACL injury. Chows are fairly prone to this and will not display any other symptoms such as sensitivity to touch, etc.

Xrays are the only way to confirm and are pricey since the vet will recommend putting the pup under for the exam. In our case, they originally diagnosed as arthritis and hip issue, so they called in a specialist (MORE MONEY).

My chow sprained his hip, at the very least rest the chow for a few days and NO walking and give it a chance to heal. If in doubt see your vet
