A little pee-pee surprise (2 yr old Chow)

Post by Clockman »

Well, I happened once before, but I never thought anything of it until it happened again today. Emma was laying on the sofa next to me, sleeping while I watched TV. After a while, she got up and moved off the sofa. As she did, I noticed she dribbled a bit of pee as she got up and walked off the sofa.

Emma is healthy and only just over 2 years old. Is this something to watch for? It wasn't a full release of her bladder, just enough to leave a half dozen spots about the size of a quarter to a half-dollar on the sheet we use to cover the sofa (keeps the hair down). It didn't reek of urine, but it must've been. I was thinking that since she was relaxed and then got up to move, she had a little leakage. She's been spayed (long ago). Thanks!

You may want to read this article or search overflow incontinence dogs on google for others.

http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Pr ... R00442.htm

Our Shadie (akita/gsd) had it when she was about 4 or 5 years old. She took meds at the time and it helped. I do know the med given at the time is no longer prescribed. (edited to add: found the med she'd taken in the article above. It's: Phenylpropanolamine (PPA); this alpha-agonist stimulates the alpha-adrenergic receptors within the internal urethral sphincter, increasing resting urethral tone. The dose is 1 - 1.5 mg/kg PO BID - TID. Side effects are hyperactivity and hypertension. This drug may work in conjunction with DES in refractory cases. Down-regulation of the receptors may occur with time, but with cessation of the drug the receptors will become sensitive again.--but again, I don't know the age of this article and I don't think it's used anymore.)

Her overflow drips never smelled of urine, they just appeared to be 'fresh' as in overflow.

Good luck and keep us posted.

my husky badger ended up with a real mild bladder sphincter incontinence after castration and is now on propalin drops 2 x daily, its rare in males and much more common in females that are spayed/nuetered, he used to dribble getting up after sleep or if he did not empty out as he should, being male he always kept a little in reserve just in case a marking oppotunity arised, but he in his new state could not afford a reserve as it would leak lol, on the propalin drops its stopped the dribbling completely :D
