Iam's or Science Diet??

Post by Clockman »

Emma's been eating Hill's Science Diet lamb and rice for puppies, but now she's turning 10 months old. We're debating switching her over to adult food now and going with Iam's. How do you guys feel about Iam's versus Science Diet? What foods are the best for her and is she now old enough for adult food?

Thanks, Chris

Nether one, look through the food section there will be better brands listed. I would say my preference but don't want to start a food war, Me being the type that trys to avoid conflict but it starts with an N ends with an O. Iams to me is probably as bad as it gets but ok if you can afford $400 aweek at the vets for skin problems.

The rule of thumb is, No wheat, no Corn, no fillers and no byproducts but especially stay away from wheat and corn fillers.

I really like the following website which gives really good information on all brands of dog food:

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com

The site tells you what's in all the foods and the pros and cons regarding it. They have ratings from 6 star to 1 star.

I wouldn't call it objective, They do list the ingredients which is good but the ratings and analyses come from the users and site owners, If I commented on any of those brands it would push it up a few stars. We kind of do the same thing but this sites recommend foods isn't layed out as well as theirs. I doubt they have tried every brand they have listed or actually analyzed them. But its an ok site and does have the foods and ingredients listed.

What DFA does NOT do:

The ratings and reviews on this site are based solely on the ingredients the manufacturers state they use in the foods and other information given. We make no assessment of their ethics, involvement in food recalls, animal testing, phenobarbitol 'scandals' or other practices, believing this to be a matter for the individual consumer. If you wish to include such considerations in your food purchase decision, we would encourage you to research widely prior to purchase.

The DFA site is actually pretty good. The ratings are not based on user reviews, but on ingredient analysis. If it was, all the Purina brands would have more stars. I was kinda bummed because I could not find the brand we use under any of the star ratings. I started high, and was dreading looking in the 1 star catagory...it was not there either! I finally found the index and looked it up. I feed Nature's Recipe- but it was listed as Del Monte's Natures Recipe! Whew. It had 3 stars, and it gave both the positive and negative aspects, which I liked.
I can see why they didn't delve into mfg. ethics and such. That was alot of research just analyzing the ingredients. I would rather they were thorough with one aspect of the dog food (and the one with the biggest impact on our individual Chows) than to take it all on, and do a less complete ingredient analysis.

Humans, Chows seem to already know how to maintain their fine figures.

I found something very humorous the other day, we have all these experts on here telling people to buy these expensive foods and all this holistic diet garb, and the people that created this site suggest feeding ProPlan in the how to care for your Chow section. Even though I feed ProPlan and recommend it, I never bothered to look in the how to care for your Chow section and read that, it was brought to my attention the other day by someone on another forum, I just laughed! Seems the people that have been at it for a long time with these dogs know what works. The N word was brought up too, funny how they all said they had skin and coat problems on that food, plus UTI's, it was a general consensus, very amusing! Just goes to show how much all the experts on here really know.

Well not using the N word your right People in the know, When I pay $500 to a Cancer Nutritionist then another almost 10,000 to an Oncologist and they both tell me they feed there dogs The N word and that I should keep Pekoe on it. I don't need star's, housewife's, so called people in the know, and wal-mart telling me what's best for Pekoe I just go to the real experts.
As paranoid as I am about Pekoe you don't think that if they told me I had to spend $1000.00 a bag for better food I wouldn't switch in a second if it ment keeping her alive. I don't own stock in Nutro nor gain anything from it, I can't even get a free sample bag from them but all I know is she's been eating it for 10 years, been through Cancer and at 12 she is still eating, pooping and chasing Squeerls, no skin problems, No UTI's and I'm not at the Vets every day pumping her full of Meds. thats all that matters to me. I do find you amusing though and full of it, Must be the Proplan.

I could care less what people feed their Chows, its not me paying the vet bills or switching food every 3 days to find the magic formula or adding crap to it so she will eat.

Oh and by the way, Pekoe just had a complete senior screening, Results, The blood work of a 5 year old. what more can be said.

I don't think a little bit of bread once in awhile is bad, Pekoe like's the hard ends of french bread (small ends). The thing I don't like about bread is it expands and is to filling gotta watch out for bloat so I would be carefull with the amount of bread at one time.

I think Wheat and Corn is a Chow thing, when I say I don't like Iams I''m talking Chow, been through that. Iam's is a popluler food and alot of dogs eat it with no Problems but Pekoe was rippig her self apart from skin problems when I first adopted her and feeding her Iam's. Pekoe's vet said Corn turns to sugar in a dogs body thats why all the energy and your dog acts years younger they are actually on a sugar high, its the sugar after eating corn filled food so I would guess the sugar is the Chows problem.

Actually, I had a chihuahua that had really bad allergies and my vet had me take her off of anything with wheat and corn in it, he said it was or can be a pretty bad allergen for dogs.
