Food Not Allowed?

Food Not Allowed?
Aside from chocolate (which I've heard is bad for dogs), are there any other kinds of food that are particularly not allowed, or not good, for a chowchow's health?
I've also heard that chicken is bad for dogs.
Thanks!

Re: Food Not Allowed?
beets, grapes, apple seeds, rasins, bread dough, poultry and fish bones, caffeine, fatty hamburger, chicken skin, pork, beef fat, butter, candy
my terrier got diabetes because I was stupid and shared some of my baked chicken w/ the skin on with her. The vet said the fatty chicken skin was most likely what caused it. Then he gave me a lecture about why I should not give my dog table scrapes. So now she just eats regular dog food and dog treats. I feel horrible about giving her diabetes and I will never mess up like that again with another dog.

Millie & Alf eat UNCOOKED bones very regularly. Their vet encourages it as they are very good at cleaning thier teeth & it keeps them busyChowfluff wrote:poultry and fish bones.

I've heard that turkey is bad. Not just the skin for the fatty problems, but the meat itself. Has anyone heard this or know if it's true?

A Dog's Thanksgiving Day
It can be fun to keep our dogs with as we enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, but it's so hard to resist the temptation to share Thanksgiving dinner with them.
Here's a few tips to help keep your furry family members happy and healthy as you gather 'round the table this Thanksgiving Day....
While cooked turkey meat is safe for dogs to eat, be extremely cautious when discarding items used to cook the turkey which may be tempting to dogs, such as skewers, string, pop-up timers, and roasting bags. Swallowing such things can cause an intestinal blockage or perforation.
Turkey bones should never be fed to dogs. All poultry bones splinter easily, and, whether splintered or whole, they can lodge inside or perforate a dog's intestines. Place turkey bones and other garbage in cans with tight fitting, dog-proof lids. If your trash cans are over-filled with extra holiday trash, place the filled bags of garbage behind a closed door with a dog-proof latch.
Turkey skin is something dogs love to eat, but consuming fatty food like poultry skin can lead to gastric distress and Pancreatitis, a serious inflammatory condition of the pancreas that causes vomiting and dehydration.
If you think you must share some of your Thanksgiving feast with your dogs, do it safely....
A sudden change in diet, like a big bowl of full of turkey and all the trimmings could cause an upset stomach and diahrrea.
Add a few pieces of boneless, skinless turkey meat to their regular food. For dogs that eat dry food, you can add a small amount of broth, just enough to moisten their regular dry dog food, or....
Bake something special ahead of time to give your dog on Thanksgiving Day -
like Turkey Dinner Loaf or Turkey Gobbler Treats.
During Thanksgiving Dinner...
Give your dog a special new chewy, an irresistable new toy, or a treat filled Kong Toy or Buster Cube to keep him occupied during the meal.
Some well-meaning guests may not know that you don't want anyone to share food with the dog. Before serving, let everyone know that they should not give anything to the dog.
Keep a watchful eye on children who might want to feed the cute doggy anyway.
Keep a watchful eye on dogs who can't resist the opportunity to steal food from little hands.

Ten miniutes after I post that Pekoe gets in the trash and eats some cookie dough and who knows what else. Like I say, just like a kid, you can't take your eyes off them for a second.

They may be the exception, but Holden and Tucker would NEVER get into the trash.Jeff&Peks wrote:"Place turkey bones and other garbage in cans with tight fitting, dog-proof lids. To this day, if I have the trash can in the middle of the kitchen for whatever reason, Holden will go over and sniff if, but he will not try to get into it. I can leave the trash out all day uncovered and he won't touch it
Hannah on the other hand... Let's just say we're working on that one...
Re: Food Not Allowed?
That's funny, I never cover the trash either, and both girls stay out of it. I didn't want to be bragging about it, because I didn't train Lily she just avoids it. Pip was trained, and to this day will take something off the top, so I bury the tempting stuff.
Re: Food Not Allowed?
I was concerned about turkey meat because my husband and I often cook turkey and have leftovers. It's just the two of us and the dogs. We are always tempted to share the meat with them, but I've been hesitant because I heard turkey meat was bad for dogs. We always trash the skin and bones.
Mine don't tend to get into the trash either - thankfully! We have one of those cans with the dome lid so maybe that helps. But they don't really seem that interested. When they get mischevious, they much prefer grabbing things that we have touched off tables and such. Paper bags, hats, mail, bread, paper towels. Oh what fun!
