Fish Food
I just have to share something so funny and also interesting about this shaggy chow I live with.
Like you all, I use treats & rewards for behaviors & Timber knows how to charm with her tricks to get the treat. Well, I had some left over broiled fish from supper--it was catfish--so I thought I'd share a little, asked for a high-five and gave her a piece. Timber looked electrified! She had an expression like "FINALLY they figured out what chows want most!!!
She then did all of her tricks one after the other FAST--slammed to the floor in a down, barked in case I might ask her to speak, jumped up to sitting pretty waving a paw wildly to give high five, next second slammed down to the floor again in a down, at the same time speaking to touch on that trick without wasting any more time--only 3-5 sec. had elapsed since she had tasted the fish (and all these tricks without my having asked her to do anything!)--she just wanted to please, please, PLEASE have a little, no maybe a lot, more of that fish!!!
This was irresistable--I shared some more and she was in chowheaven. Such enthusiasm!
Ya know, I do think chows like fish!

That's too funny! I can just see her doing the rapid routine of tricks - hope she got a big fishie for the effort!
I've been trying "sit" with Mr. N. He's pretty funny with it...he looks at the treat, looks at me and does an analysis of whether or not it's worth it..then he backs up a step or two and kinda plops his butt down, looks at me like "there! are you happy now?"

Chows are so smart! Tell me it's not just because I'm a proud mom--but it sure seems like these chows do a little more thinking about everything--almost seem to be able to reason? which everyone says dogs cannot do. But I've seen GS with that extra sense, and chows seem to have some of that too. Kind of like a very bright toddler I think. And it makes them such a delight!

I have taken mine fishing with me on several occasions and they love live trout, the whole thing! They grab it and take off like they just got a fresh kill, then lay over there knawing on it and come back for more when they are done. All of my Chows over the years have liked fresh trout.

Oh yes, they are a cut above other breeds at times! I love the challange of motivating them & LOVE that look I get that is SO weighing up whether it's worth it. Kinda like this

Too funny!!!
I'd like to see a video of that!
Hey, my son is looking for a fishing buddy to enter a team fishing tournament. What about Timber????
Wouldn't that be something? The registration does not specify the partner to be human??? Hmmm????
