Food question

Post by simbasmom »

At what age should you switch from puppy food to adult food? I keep thinking of Coco as a baby but he is going to be 1 year old in 2 weeks.. not that I would consider making any changes to his diet until we get settled in our new home.

Carol, at our first vet visit with Special, they estimated him about 1 to 1.5 and said it was okay to have him to be on adult dog food. This is a great question and I can't wait to see what the others think. Good luck!

There's a similar discussion in the thread, "cheyenne to the vet" (it's near the bottom of the first page right now). I posted a growth rate chart there as well. When the metabolism slows near the last quarter of the first year, is usually when you'll start noticing puppy food calories turning into stored fat. Looking at your dog from above and sideways, a tucked waistline should be noticible. You want to see muscular growth to support joints, and not any flab straining joints.
