There's all kinds of post on food and treats, some use Nutro products, some use science diet, do a search for food but just buy the good stuff at the pet stores, no super market or Wal-mart stuff. All the top brands offer puppy food and treats.

:( Jeff... I buy Iams from Wal-mart... Vet recomended it because he said it was good for Steel and not so expensive.
Steel seems to like it.
I used to feed Grizz and Thor Olroy, but the vet said Iams would make Steels coat dull, so suggested Iams. It's only about $1-2 more than Olroy.

How would your Vet know if Iams is good for Steel, Is he one of those Nutritionist-Cancer specialist- heat disease know everything Vets or does he sell Iams on the back shelf's of his Office. The only living thing I would feed Iams to is my Mother-inLaw, I wouldn't even feed it to the ants (see I'm soft hearted) Beside Iams being trash and costing me hundreds in Vet bills when I first adopted Pekoe, I read somewhere or someone posted that the food sold at supermarkets and Wal-mart is a lesser grade food even though it looks the same and bagged the same as the pet food stores.

I've said this a million times but Pekoe's Vet in SF says giving a dog Iams is the same as a human eating 5 chocolate bars, the stuff is filled with corn fillers. Pekoe had severe Skin problems from it. At the time we didn't know anything about foods so we feed her Iams, she was at the Vets 3 times a week getting cortisone shots because she was ripping her hair out and bleeding all over, We found out later it was the Iams, We switched to another brand (Gee guess which Brand, They also Make Dessert Treats ) We never had another problem.

Most Vets sell Science diet I'm surprised your vet is pushing Iams but if Steel isn't having any problems, YET, then stick with the Iams. Maybe your Vet said it was good for Steel because he is looking at the money he will be making in the future. Guess Iams will never send me a free bag of Food but then again Nutro doesn't either.

Plus by shopping at Wal-mart you are basically supporting some of the things you are signing petitions against.

Ok I'm done, boy I'm out of breath from talking so much.

I fed my dogs Kibble and Bits for many years. I had Pip on Science Diet Senior when I got Lily. I had her on Nature's Recipe Puppy, and at that point put Pip on their senior variety, which caused gastric upset. I can't say for certain the food was bad (smelled okay), but wasn't buying more to find out. I put Pip on Nutro Senior at this point. Both girls ate out of each other's dish, so they got a blend of food, which was my original reason for putting Pip on premium food. When Lily turned a year old, I went to one dog food for both. Nutro Natural Choice. I never had problems with store brands, but in truth, the premium foods are better for them.

Fidel, as Jeff suggested, you can do a search on this site when you are logged in. The people on this site tend to go for Nutro Lamb & Rice, Solid Gold, Innova, Wellness, Candie, etc., in other words, quality food. The dog food is regulated, ie the manufacturers have to list what's in the food. READ THE LABELS. Stay away from "Fillers" which can be corn, wheat, meat by-products. Easiest way is to look at top 5 ingredients listed. Pet shops sometimes have small sample packets. Try them out as treats. I don't taste them, but I make sure to smell them myself. Stick to Puppy Fomula until your baby stops its growing surge, 10m/s - 1.5yrs. When changing food, do it over a week to 10days introducing the new brand by adding it a little and increasing it over time. Treats are not regulated. It does not require a list of all the ingredients. It may have more sugar than a dog needs. Be aware of that. Don't fill your baby up w/ human equivalent of junk food. Use it in moderation. LEO loves chiken jerkey & salmon jerkey. You can even make your own jerkey by oven baking butterflied chiken breasts. She also thinks that Vitamin E & Salmon capsules are great treats, too!! Good Luck!

There are also treat reviews, conducted by Zhu, another good source of information.

Honestly? I am a big fan of... MILK BONES. I know, I know. Me - the one who feeds hollistic foods to the dogs. But Milk Bones have been the ONLY consistent food in Nina's life. It's the only food she has NEVER had a reaction to. And they both love them.

I'm also a big fan of Canidae's cookies and Wellness. So are the dogs. Let's not neglect Dogsters and Frosty Paws.

Hey Chris,

If you are going to try Nutro, get the smallest bag you can find to try it out on Steel. I've tried it twice now with the same results. Neither dog wants to eat it! Last time Benny went off deer hunting to supplement his diet. This time I am having to disguise it with so many other things to get it down them, I don't know why I bothered with it. I know Pekoe does great on Nutro and had a problem with other brands, but some people are allergic to peanuts, too. Unfortunately, I bought the 35 pound bag, so they are getting doggy granola for awhile. Steel may or may not love it, so my advice is don't overstock.

They love Milk Bones, too.

Don't get Nutro because I said to there are alot better brands, most on here feed Nutro. I found that most dogs that don't eat the higher grade foods are use to eating junk so its hard to get them to eat anything. Actually I was going to try switching to what Karen feeds Shiloh and Mr. N. But Pekoe's Oncologist said don't change anything for right now, Pekoes Oncologist also feeds her dogs Nutro. If you go into a Healthy pet food store I think Nutro is in the middle there are better grade foods then Nutro. I hope Nutro's not reading this, I at least want a dollar off coupon.

For foods, I like Canidae, Wellness, Innova, Nature's Recipe and Nature's Variety Prairie.

Science Diet is cancer in a bag. So is anything you can buy at the supermarket/Walmart.

Lets look at the food this way, Pekoe will be 11 in February, when all her blood work and other test came back both the vet and the Oncologist said if thy didn't know Pekoe's age they would think they were looking at the test of a 4 year old, except for the oral cancer in her mouth, not form what she eats, (What she eats probably helped alittle with the Cancer). she is in perfect health. Yesterday we were out walking and Pekoe spotted a cat, she took off so fast she hit the curb did a complete flip in the air, fell on her back then got back up and went after the cat, she hit the curb so hard I thought for sure she had to of broken something. She is 11, she has been on Nutro since 2 years old. Except for her yearly exams I have only been to the vet twice in her life both times not for health reasons but for fights she got into. So what ever it is you feed your puppy, even if they don't like it they will eat it when they are hungrey, It has to be a higher grade food so in the later years they stay healthy. Its just like a kid, give a kid junk food he will eat it, give him a salad no way.

I like that Cancer in a bag, Have to use that on the next Iams Commercial.

Yeah, puppy. Details said that it has added vitamins and nutrients. I don't think I will get the kong. I think the tennis balls will be enough.

Steels latest "baby" is a goofy doll. Floppy ears, legs, arms..wears a hat.. (so far its still on... LOL )
