Chow needs high or low protein? Dry food?

Post by cge2809 »

Hi guys!
I know chows need some curtain amount of proteins.
But how much protein does my chow need?

I feed my chow Nutro Natural Choice chicken&brown rice.
2cups/2 times a day with a spoon of canned food for topping.
But I stopped giving her canned food bcuz i dont think canned food is healthy food for them.
And she doesn't eat her food now... So at this point, I wanna switch her food to something better.

you guys recommand me Orjin, Blue buffalo,Innova are good.
Which one is the best?

orijin sounds good but it contains too much protein
So some people refuse to feed it.
High protein can cause kidney problem.
Is it true?

What should I feed my chow?
Should i keep feeding canned food for topping?

You need to understand how commercial dog food manufacturers achieve "high protein".

The actual meat in mid or low protein foods is the same meat in high protein foods. The reason that high protein foods are higher, is because products like Brewers Yeast are added to the food. Brewers yeast is high in protein, and generally speaking it is THAT that causes problems with dogs. Not the meat itself, but the additives like brewers yeast.

Real Meat and meat protein does not cause kidney problems in dogs.
A dog's digestive system is designed to consume 100% real meat and not much else, so every additive is a potential problem. Look for foods without additives.

Look for a food t hat doesn't contain grains or other unwanted additives like brewers yeasts, and most likely you'll be fine,

There are plenty of dog food comparison sites online that allow you to evaluate the quality of the dog foods you are using.
If you find one that works for you. Great!

PS - canned food ( again, depending on what is in it) is generally better than dry food in the first place, and less processed, so don't stop feeding it. There are plenty of good ones out there. Read the labels.

Thank you sooo much! I did some more research
And found out the canned food is moisturizing food.
When the dry food has no moisture, we need to mix with
Canned food so it balances!

By the way about her food, we feed her Acana. Fish and chicken. Acana is same brand as Orijin with lower
Protein( about 31%). Hope this one is good for her,

I know puppies need 28% crude protein (from meat) and 17% fat while adults need 20-24% protein and 9-15% fat. I follow the same for my Chestnut. At Six months she loves Canidae Pure Sky (duck and turkey), Orijen Regional red (beef) and Acana Lamb and Okanagan Apple.
