Puppy's or dogs do not shake without a reason. Usually it is to get water off or because they are itchy. Did you bathe him when you brought him home, spray him with flea spray, etc.? He could be allergic to the soap or spray. At walmart or simialr place you can buy oatmeal shampoo which you can bathe him in that will help IF he is shaking because he is itchy.

Any reputable breeder or shelter would not adopt a puppy before 8 weeks. It is likely that he has not had all his shots, etc. Also taking him from his mother so early can cause behavioral problems later due to seperation anxiety.

First & foremost you want to get information from the person you got the puppy from as to what shots & wormers they gave the little guy. Then get him to a vet and make sure he starts all of his puppy shots, wormers, etc. Parvo is a huge risk for a puppy and I dont think you want to risk loosing another chow.

Get the puppy to a vet. Most likely he has something in his ear, or an ear infection.

thanks i didn't spray or bathe him.i did call the breeder and told him i was very concerned about the shaking. he agreed that after i take him to the vet if he says its a bad problem he will take the pup back and return my money. he says all of his chows shake like this. i'm thinking maybe inbreeding. also we weighed the dog and he's only 3lbs. i'm not sure he's really 6 weeks. i can't get him to a vet because my car will bein the shop until aweek from friday and i'm having to have some inpatient hospital procedured

Dont you have a friend, relative, or neighbor that could help you out? If you are having an inpatient procedure, how are you getting to hospital? Could that person help you out?

I appologize in advance cause I really don't mean to be rude but I just don't understand ... you have the money to buy from a breeder but don't have the money to ship a shelter dog to you (as you stated in another post)? If you bought a chow chow puppy and the cost was no where near $1000 then you likely purchased from a backyard breeder. A responsible breeder has to charge more because they dont breed their females everytime they come into season. Occaisonally, you may find an individual who's chow was accidently mated that could charge less but that is very rare.

In anycase, you need to get that puppy to the vet. At 3 lbs he is very small and either he is not 6 weeks or something is wrong with him (even if he has stopped shaking).

All of this sends up red flags to me... I would have taken my money and run from a "breeder" selling 6 week old puppies. That's way too young to be taken from their mom. Sounds like one of the worst BYBs ever.

a bit of good news we have him ina clothes basket with newspaper and snuggly stuff. he seems to like it he shakes less and is content chewing his caterpillat. i don't think he's close to 6 weeks. the more snuggle and love him it seems like the less he shakes. maybes it wishful thinking. but we so hope he is healthy

I had one baby chow-sheperd that loved the clothes basket also. If you have a heated blanket you might want to try that on the lowest setting or throw a blanket in the dryer for about 15 minutes. There is an 'old wifes tale' about putting an old style clock (not digital) under the blanket to soothe a puppy. Supposedly, the ticking sound is like a moms hearbeat. Worth a try if you happen to have one of those clocks.

BTW: heated blanket would go under another blanket and/or just on one side of the basket 'cause the lowest setting for humans may be too much for a puppy this small.

he seems to ne improving a little everyday. he is more steady on his feet today. can run pretty fast. hopefully he will out grow it. we did report puppy mill/ breeder to aspca says they can take away license amd fine him $250 for each puppy. the reason we didn;t go to a breeder is our income is $1500 a month. the picture of the pup on craigslist looked identical to our princess. plus they said thry would give our money back if something is wrong with him. we paid $75 for him

Definitely a byb. It sounds like this pup is seriously having some issues. Get him to a vet and try to keep him snuggled (provides comfort and security), and make sure he is warm. I don't know what inbreeding would have to do with shaking but the whole story sounds odd. Please keep us informed.

i will keep you all updated. i think where the inbreeding may come in where his parents were too closely related and that left him with health problems

i don't know what to do. took to vet got started on shots. has gained 1 and a half pounds. vet says he can't tell if its shaky puppy or neurological. says need a specialist. just a visit with out tests is $165.he seems to be getting stronger by the day. he can climb 3 steps by himself. we think we are going to see if he keeps getting strong. i want him to have a chance

I'm glad that you are giving him a chance. It seems like you are attached to the little fellow so just give him as much attention and love that you can. You've already started his shots and that is great. I swear if I ever win the lottery I will have a facillity to supply free care and vaccinations to all that need it. Sometimes pet care is so outrageous and I don't think it needs to be. If I recall I thought you stated that you are home with him alot and that is great. Keep us informed on how he is doing.

thank you all so much. i have good news today. i went to the vet that treated my princess. told her all of the above. says the best thing we can do is love him and see how things go. when i got home i was so surprised.i bought him a collar and leash. he was able to walk the distance in front of my home without sitting down. and he seems to be standing much more. if i knew how to put pictures up i would. he is adorable and very loving

Hang in there. A hot water bottle could be used to provide warmth for the puppy. When I got Ursa, she was probably 6 weeks old. She weighted 3.6 pounds, did not have hair on her feet or tail due to flea allergies. She had not been socialized and was very shy. My guess is that she was probably the product of a puppy mill, and was simply turned loose since she was not marketable. I just happened to be at the shelter when she was brought in, and took her to keep her from being euthanized by animal control. That was 4 years ago. I have a dog with some issues, and I LOVE her. And she loves me. I took the dogs out shopping today, and folks comment on how well behaved they were. We spent some time in pet smart, and they got to meet a number of people. We seem to have her thyroid medication correct and diet right, and her coat is beginning to look like it should.

You can work with this puppy, and in the long run have a very good companion. At six weeks, it is difficult to tell totally how the dog will develop. Good care, good nutrition, and a lot of training and socialization will help to overcome a lot of issues. The care you provide right now will help determine the final outcome. I wish you the best of luck.
