Nutro shortage ???

Post by Dogdad »

Has anyone else had problems getting Nutro. My Petco has a sign where the type of Nutro I buy normally is that says
" due to packaging problems of Nutro dogfood, supplies may be limited and we are unsure of delivery dates" It has been there for a month. I ended up buying solid gold hund n flocken but prefer nutro as it is about 10.00 a bag less and with 5 dogs, we go through a lot of bags

First of all your paying way to much for Nutro buying it from Petco even if it was only $9.00 a bag, Buy it from Pet-smart or if you have a Healthily Pet around its even cheaper from them. I guess your talking about the small bags, that's the size I always get I don't have anywhere to store the big bags.

I don't know if this is the reason your Petco has a shortage but about a month ago they raided Petco's warehouses becouse of rats and contaminated food so confiscated all of Petco's food and shut down the warehouses. It wasn't all of Petco's warehouses it was just in certain area's in the US..

Petco is more expensive with everything in the store not just food. Petsmart and Healthypet sell more Nutro then the other foods so sells it cheaper, Petco takes advantage of the demand and jacks up the prices.

Jeff,

I buy the 44 pound bag every two weeks. 5 dogs remember. :D The price is the same at our petsmart. Petco has the buy 10 get one free offer, not saving tons but it helps, My petsmart is also out of the kind I buy, the one with the sheep dog, lamb and rice I think.

try mixing in some of the dental ,[if you can find it ] it is in a 30 Lb bag but is *special* to help keep teeth clean , my guys really like it since it is pretty big kibble . ovoids perhaps 3/4 inch x 1/2 inch

when i can get the dental i use 3 parts [30 lb bag to 4 parts[ 40 lb bag] vary what i get in the 40 lb.. chicken ot turkey in summer , add the lamb in the winter, some times get the reduced calorie , the chow would eat them all pretty good , untul he found it with out the dental , now he is very picky.. and does not eat it as well.

i do not know if it is the dental nutro or the meaty bones but the vet remarks on how clean teeth are..

Look for me i will be the one on the other side of the street with a black Chow tryig to beat you to the road kill. Maybe we can have a Chow fest at the hobo camp while we BBQ the road kill.

I was doing some research on Nutro and I found some scary stuff on it. I don't want to cry wolf but I am experiencing the same problems with all of my furkids. Maxwell and Yoshi just have been eating grass and having soft stools the others are having the same symptoms as the people in the links. I really have trusted nutro in the past but now I am having my doubts.
It seems like the company now manufactures the food in Europe and animals are getting sick from it.
I normally don't believe everything that I read BUT my youngest and smallest dog Aldo has been throwing up bile almost everyday, the second smallest, and has been drinking a lot,Mikimoto is also beginning to throw up . I took Aldo to the vet and had lots of tests done and they haven't found anything.
I just purchased a new type of dog food since I can't find Nutro and see if helps
here are the links I found. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/nutro.html
http://dogblog.dogster.com/2008/05/05/s ... -pet-food/
http://cats.about.com/b/2008/04/25/nutr ... rutiny.htm has comments from dog owners

and this
Renee of Charlotte NC (08/12/08)
I switched our two indoor large breed (purebred Chow and chow/collie mix) dogs to Nutro Senior several months ago. I began to notice within the last month or so that they were both eating lots of grass, drinking more than usual, and one dog has been battling runny stools off and on. We also feed our dogs boiled ground beef or stewed skinless chicken breasts with rice twice per day and we leave dry food in their bowls for grazing 24/7. Thank goodness the dogs do not desire to eat dry food everyday!

Somehow I bumped into this website last week, noticed the posts and immediately stopped feeding our dogs Nutro. My husband returned a large bag to PetSmart and the PetSmart manager told him that the negative stories regarding Nutro were just rumors and that they (PetSmart) could hardly keep it stocked on the shelves. He obtained a refund and we switched to Avoderm. I am hoping for the best.

Regardless of the fact that Nutro and PetSmart will not admit to a problem, the Nutro postings of other dog/cat parents is enough for me to boycott this product forever. My heart goes out to all of those people who have lost their furry children.

There is no Manufactured food made that hasn't had someone complaining about it. No matter what the food or who makes it you will find a compliant that it killed their dog or made it sick. A lot of People Like the raw diet I find nothing wrong with it but I'm to lazy to go through all that yet you will find people saying the same thing, the raw diet killed my dog. As long as the food hasn't had a national recall I wouldn't believe anything you read on the internet. If a dog is eating Wolfking and it sneezes OMG wolfking made my dog sneeze it almost died. Forget these tired old ladies that sit around all day reading labels and recommending food, all they are doing is hoping to get enough people to come to their site then some dog food company will pick them up and pay them.

As for Nutro we must have a differant Nutro company in CA, Pekoe has been eating it for 11 years and as far as the vet is concerned is Healthy as hell for her ageand what she has been through. Most everyone I know, vets, specialist, neighbors, Horse ranches in the area that have 20 dogs running around all feed Nutro and never have a problem, the shelf's are stocked with every blend Nutro makes... If a Chow/dog is getting soft stooles or the runs from Nutro I would be seeing a vet and not blaming the food or looking to see what else the dog is eating, I have never seen soft stools from Pekoe until I tried Innova once but it wasn't Innova'a fault it was just to rich for Pekoe.

As long as your feeding a somewhat decent food even if its Pro-plan there shouldn't be any problems. What causes the problems is switching food every week/month, supplements, add ons and what ever else people toss in the food to get them to eat. These aren't human stomachs we are talking about these are sensitive Chow stomachs. (do I hear Bloat). Chows/dogs don't eat from taste they eat from smell if they ate from taste you would be visiting macdonalds everyday just like your kids..

Yea right, i get nothing from those people not even a free sample bag, If it wern't for one of the posters I wouldn't even know there was a discount coupon in each bag. THey could at least send me a free Nutro dessert or a bumper sticker.

At least you get a free Wal-mart t-shirt with your food.

Yeah I know, I thought everyone already knew that. What I really hate is you wanting to check peoples receipts when they leave, I know its your job but why so slow it takes for ever to get out the front door, can't you just greet people and give then baskets? and by the way, Speak English

My brother Earl went to the mall the other day and this nice person made a story about it: :D

A redneck family from the hills was visiting the city and they
were in a mall for the first time in their lives. The father and son
were strolling around while the wife shopped. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and then slide back together again.

The boy asked, 'Paw, what's at?'

The father (never having seen an elevator) responded,
'Son, I dunno. I ain't never seen anything like that in my entire life; I ain't got no idea'r what it is.'

While the boy and his father were watching with amzement, a
fat old lady in a wheel chair rolled up to the moving walls and pressed
a button.. The walls opened and the lady rolled between them into a small room. The walls closed and the boy and his father watched the small circular number above the walls light up sequentially. They continued to watch until it reached the last number and then the numbers began to light in the reverse order.

Then the walls opened up again and a gorgeous, voluptuous 24 year-old
blonde woman stepped out.

The father, not taking his eyes off the young woman, said
quietly to his son 'Boy..................Go gitcha Momma

David my two are on Nutro Lamb and Rice and have no issues with it. The were raised on Nutro large breed puppy then I tried to switch to Innova and that gave them poopy butts. I tried the Nutro L&R at Jeffs suggestion and no issues. All of that stuff you posted does scare me though so now I don't know what the heck to do.

I buy Nutro L&R (small bites) at the commissary and a few weeks ago they didn't have any large bags. I ended up buying a couple small bags to hold us over. The next time I went back they had large bags. I didn't think anything of it until you posted this.
I haven't noticed any difference in my pack. They're always eating grass so that's nothing new. I wish I could turn them loose on the front yard so I wouldn't have to mow so often.

We we first arrived I had a heck of a time at petsmart picking out food. My god, I only had 3-4 brands to choose from in China and I didn't know where to being.
Anyway, I eyed the Nutro products for awhile but decided against it because of the negative comments. I didn't look for a specific type but every time I go to petsmart, which is at least once a week, the Nutro shelves seem well stocked.
If the kids are having stomach problems, I'd say switch the food. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like only certain batches are "contaminated" but I wouldn't want to take any chances.

Jeff, you'll disagree with me on this but I feed my kids a whole bunch of different things, including 3 kinds of dry kibble, tripe, and a locally made raw dog food. I alternate 2 or 3 of the above combination daily. It's been working out really well. No stomach issues and they enjoy the variety.

BTW, I've only seen my kids eat grass once or twice. Haley's thrown up about 5 times in the 2+ years I've had her. Cara did it often as a pup but she's doing great now. Haven't had a problem since coming to America. So I must be doing something right. :D

Our shortage has been going on for about 2 months. I trusted nutro but after reading what I did, I am not sure, remember the first round of bad dog food, It started out the same way until it became wide spread. Those products were good for years and suddenly... Nutro is a good brand food but they can't control their suppliers and what happens to the food products before they get it. I am going to try hund n flocken for a month and see if they improve. The chows seem fine on it but the smaller dogs are getting sick. Just thought I would share what I found out and seem to be experiencing, Just keep an eye out on your dogs, If they start getting sick it may be the cause
