Dead grass spots
I understand that we have chosen to have our dog...and she is a girl....and as such her urine is somewhat acidic which creates brown patches in the lawn....wold like to have a nice lawn...yet happy and safe for Kira....is there something that we can do to minimze these spots? Looks bad if we have to sell our house if the lawn isn't nice. was hoping for some ideas...I've seen some meds to give her to help, but wasn't really sure that was the route we wanted to take. We are pretty careful what we give her already in her food. any help or suggestions would be a great help
Re: Dead grass spots
I think there is something you can put in their water bowl to help stop this but I'm not sure what it's called.

You should have your water analyzed or check to see what you are feeding, I have never had that problem with Pekoe. I was just talking to some neighbors about that same subject yesterday, Pekoe has been marking every lawn in about 20 homes everyday, twice aday for two years yet the lawns have never discolored. We have some pretty lush lawns in the area (not including mine) They were joking that when we first moved in they were getting mad everytime I walked by because Pekoe would pee all over their lawn but no damage was ever done so now that they know us they don't care anymore, All we could come up with is its either in the food or the water she is drinking. I have never seen my lawn or any lawn discolored so I just chocked it up to another Canine myth but I guess it happens. The water in your area may have a high acid or salt content, if so you can install a filter or water softener that should take care of the problem. You can also have your Chows Urine checked to see what going on.
Pekoe is extremely territorial she thinks she owns the neighborhood so if its green or moves she will pee on it.

Re: Dead grass spots
well we have found a product that seems to be helping. its just a liquid that has some vitamins in it...she eats it on her food and spots are decreasing. as for getting her to only do her busiess in one area?????? ya right she's a chow...what she wants ...where she wants!

I have heard that you can also water the area she pees on to minimize these spots. I think you have to water it right after she pees, though.

Personally I wouldn't put any extra chemicals in my dog. There are sprays and pellets you can use on the grass to minimize spotting. You can find them in any pet store. I haven't tried any because my lawn is 90% dead anyway.

I've read somewhere if you put some apple cider vinegar in with their drinking water this helps... I've not tried it though!

Re: Dead grass spots
so the product that we used for the whole summer is called "Grass saver" made by naturvet. It worked very well, she didn't seem to have any adverse affects to it, and the lawn is green...so mission accomplished.
Re: Dead grass spots
Dead grass spots mean that the urine is nicely acidic and you don't want to go changing that for any reason.
Your chow, with a nicely acidic body, means it won't get yeast issues and can digest food very well.
These tablets will alter your dog's pH and that is a bad thing.
It is better to treat the dead grass spots with a tough grass seed then try to alter your dog's health through the use of those types of products - or like someone suggested, create a "chow-trine", area and encourage your chow chow to use that area for latrine duties. That's really the best way.

I want to second what Merlin wrote. My boy, Zhuyo, would pee under my neighbor's plum tree in the front and the grass would turn brown. I asked my vet about it since it was so embarrassing and he said the exact same thing. My neighbor said don't worry it's just grass. BTW, my neighbor has the best looking lawn in the neighborhood. So he knew who the culprit was making the little brown patches and brown trails towards our front door.
Remember, a quick fix now could end up with long range medical problems with chows.
