Why is my chow chow chewing so much?

Post by beckysmyth92 »

Hello! I have a 15 week old female chow chow, Dakota. I have had her for 3 weeks, she has been very well socialised and is very playful, healthy and happy. However sometimes when i play with her she chews my fingers, its not sore or forceful however I'm worried if this is signs of aggressive behaviour? She is generally very well behaved & I have taught her so far to: Sit, Stay, Lay, Jump and fetch which she does when instructed.

Is my chow chow chewing my fingers aggressive behaviour?

I appreciate all responses & thank you for reading :)

I personally wouldn't worry, just try to re-enforce for her to be gentle whenever she does chew. Rio loves to have a chomp on my hands and I just allow him to but ask him to do it gently. He is not aggressive at all, she could also be teething and if your hands are cool it may feel quite refreshing.
If it becomes more snappy then I would say remove hand and insert a toy!

She's teething. When she chews your fingers/hands remove them, tell her "no", walk away, and ignore her. If you let her continue, she come to think it's acceptable behavior, and you don't want a full grown chow chewing you. Repeat this every time her teeth come in contact with your skin and she'll soon learn it's not acceptable and play time will end if she does it.

I agree with tippsy, likely she is teething a bit. You dont want her teeth contacting your skin. But do give her something else to chew on. Rope style toys are great. There are a couple toys that are designed to be put in the freezer and some dogs like these (hit or miss in my opinion). Chows love sticks and branches.

thank you for all replies :)
Dakota is responding quite well when I tell her "No!" and put a toy in her mouth! I have also purchased her some chew sticks which she is really enjoying! I tried putting toys in the freezer, unfortunately a miss for her as she just licks them for a second then moves on to a different toy! When I play with her and she chews my fingers I have began saying "No!" and ignoring her which has resulted in her playing much better!

Thanks again everyone :)
