Shadow Chaser

Post by NanouetJon »

So Maddoxx has been developing quite the obsession for chasing light and shows. At first it was funny and cute but now its getting annoying and to be honest I am a little worried.

So you open the front door and a ray of bright sunshine streams in across the room. Maddoxx will streak across the room to try and jump on the light beam on the floor. A watch reflected on the ceiling or wall will drive him crazy leaping and jumping at the spot.

Last night we kept hearing a thump coming from the spare bedroom. Sure enough after a good hour of it, I went to check it out and there is Maddoxx sitting pretty watching the wall. Every time a car rounded the corner it cast a light the went in an arc ( Curtains were drawn ) He was leaping at the wall to catch the light. THUMP. He isn't getting hurt but its has become an obsession. After seeing a shadow or light he will run to all his spots he has seen them before and check to see if they have come back.

Anyone else seen this? Have any ideas how to stop this kind of behavior?

It could be OCD. Certain breeds (rotties, for example) are prone to it. If he is doing it constantly and consistently, then you need to speak to your vet and also bring in a behavioral trainer. There are medications they use to treat it (like in humans) that will make him less stressed out.

Indeed. We've had a thread or two on that topic, including the use of laser lights increasing OCD in pets.

Excerpt: Obsessive Behavior

Laser lights and flashlight games need special mention. Don't! These games commonly lead to obsessive behaviors. A laser light can also damage a dog's eyes. When an obsession with light-chasing becomes full-blown, the dog may require lifelong medication to control the ceaseless search for any beam of light or shadow to follow.
