Introducing my precious Patience!

Post by MightyChow » Sun Sep 16, 2007 5:21 pm

Patience would like to say hello (or sniff) to all the chowlings out there. I adopted her last week from our local Humane Society here in Canada after seeing her picture on their web site. It's so rare to see a chow up for adoption - last one I saw was about a 1 1/2 years ago. She's 9-years-old and was found as a stray. Unfortunately her coat was so matted that they had to shave it completely off. At first, they thought she was a boy so her name was Douglas. Then they changed it to Dora soon after. The fur is slowly growing back but she has to wear a sweater when it's cold outside. She's a wonderful, affectionate girl, and loves everybody. Here are some pictures.

(click on pictures for bigger view)

Here she is at the shelter. They shaved her right down to the skin, poor girl. She didn't seem to mind.

Image

But the fuzz is coming back, It's so soft.

Image

Look at her little fur "boots".

Image

"Do I look okay in this red sweater?" I'll buy her a warm jacket for the winter.

Image

And this is one of my favourite pics so far. Excuse the faux-wood paneling. :D

Image

Hope you enjoyed the pics. When I'm walking her, she gets so many looks from people. She does look a mini lion with her shaved coat.

Chow greetings from Patience!

What a beautiful girl Dora is.
Welcome to our site and thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking in an older rescue Chow....poor little girl wouldn't have had a chance without someone like you.

Luckily the shelter has a no-kill policy for adoptable dogs. She would've found a home eventually, but I've owned a chow before so I like to think she found a good owner. :D

I changed her name from Dora to Patience. It definitely fits her personality.

Thanks for the welcome!

I'll post picture updates as the fur grows. :D

She is darling! I wonder why they shave the legs so far down- it isn't like they have lone fur after the body! Must have been necessary.

They said that her fur was so matted that they couldn't bend her legs properly.

Here's a picture I just took.

Thanks everybody! It does feel good to adopt an older dog because I know that they're often the last ones chosen. Funny though, when I went to see her, she looked relaxed as ever and didn't seem to be disturbed by all the dogs going barking crazy around her. She's so easy-going.

All your dogs are beautiful too. [:D]

I'm so glad to see she got a good home. I'm from Winnipeg too and saw her on the humane society website. Even considered going to see her but I already have 2 chows (and 2 cats and a bird) so my house is pretty full. I knew that if I saw her in person I would have 3 chows :)

She is the reason that cut is called a "lion" cut because that's definitely what she looks like. She is very beautiful. It's amazing how fast their fur grows back after it's been cut. In no time she will be a big, fluffy dog.

Thanks for rescuing!

I took her to the vet yesterday because I wanted to get a second opinion on her health. Her teeth aren't that great and she has a fractured upper right K9. There is no sign of gum disease. He didn't recommend doing anything to them. I'm trying to brush her teeth but it's proving difficult. She has no interest in dental toys like nylabones or even a marrow bone. She also has a lot of discharging in her right eye so he gave me some antibiotic to put in her eye for seven days. Her eyes are a bit cloudy but there is no sign of cataracts, and she doesn't have entropian. Other than that, her heart and lungs are excellent and she's in overall great physical health.

She was so perfect with the vet. She let him do everything without one growl or any fuss. What a perfect girl. :D

Thanks all for your kind comments.

I'm so happy for you. We're fortunate that we've never really had a problem with our dogs at the vet, although they can all be a little squirmy on the table, especially with nail trims.

Re: Introducing my precious Patience!

Post by MightyChow » Wed Mar 19, 2014 2:52 am

I know this is a rather late reply, and that I didn't continue the updates, but my life with Patience kept me so happy and busy that I kind of forgot this on-line world. She changed my life and helped me so much with the anxiety and social phobia I was dealing with. I didn't socialize much, but she became so well-known in the neighbourhood (the mini lion dog) that I met many great people and gained much confidence. She was the best therapy I've ever had.

Unfortunately, I had to have Patience put down in 2011. She lost the use of her back legs, but I bought her an Eddie's Wheels wheelchair which allowed her to go for walks around the neighbourhood for one more summer. She also started losing her appetite and, despite everything we tried, became very skinny. She suffered from kidney disease and was getting worse. In the end, after her last walk in her wheelchair in the backyard, I knew it was time to let her go - she was suffering too much. I will never forget that day. I feel guilty for letting her go on too long.

My heart is still broken. My girl gave me 4 years of wonderful life that I would never have had. I miss you, sweetheart, my baby. I'm 40 and never had kids of my own, so she was my child.

I also lost another chow in 2012, who I adopted only a few years before at a local shelter. He was younger than Patience, and I thought I'd have many more years left with him. Things did not work out. I miss my boy, Ludlow, one of the most outgoing Chows I've ever known. He liked everybody instantly.

I have been without a dog for two years now, and feel a gaping hole in my heart. Everybody keeps telling me to get another dog, but I'm so scared to lose again. (I had another Chow who died in 2005.) I have this dream that I'll find another Chow - a smaller one (40lbs) like Patience so I can pick him/her up if they need help - but I live in Winnipeg, Canada, and there are no breeders nearby. I am not able to travel far, unfortunately.

I wanted to write this in memory of Patience, as well as Ludlow and Teddy. Chow Chows are my soul mates, and life does not feel complete without one being around.

Thank you all. Give your Chows a big bear hug for me, okay?

Ludlow's head-tilting action. "Whatcha doing'?" Taken in 2011.
