The Packard auto photo reflects the years of prosperity and thrift during the presidency of Calvin Coolidge in the 1920's, when two Chows lived in the White House - 'Tiny Tim' aka 'Terrible Tim', and 'Blackberry'. The two Chows of this popular president started a wave of popularity for the breed, which resulted in over-breeding and the breed's ruin, but Chows were able to make a comeback with responsible breeding in the 1950's and 60's. Here's a photo of Mrs. Coolidge and one of the White House Chows.
Re: "The first photo kind of looks like our chows today, but the second really is different."
The Chow from the 1900's, while not a great looking speciment, was probably treasured more for the exotic appeal and rarity. That Chow was also one of the first to be 'shown' and 'win' as breed clubs organized. As already mentioned, he was owned by a countess, so charting bloodlines, owning and establishing breed purity, were interests set aside for the wealthy and the aristocracy.

Thanks, Kiwani, very cool photos. We were discussing spurts of overbreeding over the century in another thread, and I had a dim memory of glamour photos of Hollywood stars with their chows that were pre-1940's. Do you have any info or photos in that vein? I've googled myself silly, and the only thing I've managed to come up with is this:
Not really what I had in mind....

Haven't any Hollywood photos at the moment, but here's one of Freud's Chows from the early 1930s. The link below has photos of some early Chows bred by Lady Phillips, and a photo of "Blue Blood" (born 1893) who is the grandson of "Pekoe II"(born 1888). Other photos include Han dynasty ceramics of Chows - haven't looked through the rest of site yet...

Oh, these are SO cool. I just LOVE the 1920's, 30's and 40's. The cloths, the styles... And now to know that ChowChows were "fashionable" then.....no wonder I love that time period. My Father, who is now 76, told me when I got Chuy that he remembered there being a lot of Chows in his neighbourhood when he was a boy (1930's).

Chows are not the whole of our lives but, they make our lives whole.

That's interesting, because she was a big time German film star... a connection to Freud. Love the picture of him with his chows, altho I suspect Sophie is probably a Jungian.
I had read somehere that he would time his sessions by his chows. When they started to get up and walk around the office, the hour was up.
Thanks for the link, Kiwani... can't wait to check it out.

Re: "I think it might be a German photo by looking closely at the type on it."
Lil Dagover came up in a search on silent films and chow-chow. She worked in films until the 1930s. Here's a little about her.
