The Life of Louie

Post by gluesticks »

I am new here, but I figured I'd start a thread in dedication of my little boy, Louie. Its tradition after all... I've done it with all of my lizards for the last 6 years, haha. They have a thread of their own on various reptile websites very similar to this one.

Anyway, Louie was born July 26, 2012 from a litter of 5 and from both a blue sire and dam. He is currently 9 weeks old yesterday. It has been an interesting first week and I've learned quite a bit, in terms of training, from a few of you here.

Of course, 5 years ago I did have a red chow chow named Dakota who has since passed. She was the love of my life. Currently, my family owns a retriever/ chow chow mix is also the love of my life. But living on my own for the past 2 years, I couldn't stand not having a dog physically present in my house and life... So after a long wait (7 months after my deposit with a breeder), we received our furry bundle of joy, Louie!

So here is Louie upon receiving him from the airport on September 20th, 2012. Enjoy!

A little scared upon coming out of the carrier at the airport. But nonetheless, eager to get out of there!

Me (duh) and Louie. He pooped shortly after this XD

Quite comfortable at home

and... his first bath on 9.27/12. That morning he decided it was a great idea to play in the mud, so off to the tub he went!
Image

and here's a short video of one of his many crazy spurts... right before he decides he has to pee on the potty pad behind the couch. (me know if you can watch it)

He's adorable. And looks so nice and cuddly. May he grow up to be the beauty he promises to be and may you have many years with him.

Picture sent from my boyfriend while I was at school all day on my terrible Tuesday classes. How could you leave this face at home? I don't know how I do it.

So its that time of the year (in which I may not be able to enjoy. Hurricane Sandy is making sure to ruin our Halloween.. -sigh-.) Louie is wearing the Headless Horseman costume. He was completely fine with the body portion, but after I put on the head part well, this is how he looked. Haha.

On Wednesday, I visited my aunt and uncle and our family dog, Sam (who is my bud. I am so happy that he tolerated Louie, at least for some of the time!)

January 16, 2014: Update on Louie.

Since being diagnosed with severe congenital hip dysplasia in both hips on October 28, 2013, Louie has had his good days and bad days.

@ 1.5 years in age, I think that he has his youth on his side.

Since starting him on glucos + chondr supplements (Pet Naturals by Vermont chewables) which he receives 2x/day and the homeopathic medication for osteo related pain (Zeel) which he also receives 2x/day, Louie has developed more energy and enthusiasm. I recommend both supplements/medications highly!

While he still has reluctance to walk up the stairs or jump into the car, he can (and does) get into things and look for trouble like he used to when he was a puppy, and manages to sneak into the bed once in a while. Walking him at least once a day to and from the park has helped maintain this sneak behavior and helps keep his joints and muscles mobile.

He has completed 4 training classes and is currently working on his canine good citizenship.

While he has some trouble greeting men in the house, he quickly warms up to them and while still weary, wants to play with them after 20 minutes or so. Women he has no trouble meeting, so long as he is able to greet them first, and then he is a happy fellow.

Our Petplan dog insurance (gopetplan.com) has notified us that Louie WILL be covered for any and all therapies and/or surgeries Louie may require in the future (up to our plan of course). It is another thing that I recommened. If you are a first time puppy owner, or have recently gotten a puppy, enroll your dog in dog insurance! It is affordable (apprx $455/year for us) and Petplan, so long as the dog was not showing clinical signs of any congenital problems prior to enrollment, WILL cover congenital diseases, like the one that Louie has.

Because of this, in the spring time, we plan on taking Louie to occasional therapy (acupuncture, water therapy, etc), so long as we are financially stable.

Hip dysplasia can be maintained, as it varies from case to case and dog to dog. Our vet only recommends FHO surgery as a last resort to pain, as he is a young dog and can benefit greatly on therapy varieties. So it will def be considered as time goes on, but is not required at this time (but it is nice to know that things will be covered with our insurance if we decide to do it). At this point in time, he does not appear to be in any kind of pain that would interrupt his daily routine, so maintaining exercise is key for keeping him moving and relatively pain free, frequent small meals, and his administered joint supplements and homeopathic pain meds seem to be helping.

Ok makes sense..Mia was in some pain somedays...We just felt it was better to take care of it now while she was young Its only going to get worse...so we figured she could recover quicker being she was young...Our specialist said the FHO was the best way to go for her..Actually the Vet we used He was the one who invited this process so we fingered we were in good hands...And today she seems so much happier..Hope all goes well with Louie...He is a Beautiful Boy...
