ROSCOE - A year in the making

Post by kimigirl »

ROSCOE's 2 months and 1 week. He's a brown/cinnamon compact chow. He was released to me at 6 weeks. At that time he had a respiratory infection and was put on antibiotics and had mange. He's recovered now and the spread of his bald spots have stopped. His appetite has increased immensely and is now very active and energetic. Being in the Philippines, most of the puppies are ill until they find a good home.

At 6 weeks, he weighed 1.6 kg. (3.52 lbs.).
After recovery at 8 weeks, he weighed 2.5 kg. (5.5 lbs)

He's growing fast and gaining weight too. He takes vitamin supplements, and Coat Shine (Omega Fatty Acids, Vitamins and Minerals)
We're learning a lot from these forums and are looking forward to sharing his growing up stages with you. :D

Very cute puppy. Good for you for taking such good care of him. If you haven't yet, make sure to deworm him, he can have worms for a long time and still grow. But without them he'll grow better and faster.

Thanks you for your posts.

Glad and sad to say he's growing up so fast.

At 9 weeks he's now 3.2 kg. (7.04 lbs). That's almost 2 pounds in a week.
Every chance I get (and if he lets me) i just keep hugging and cuddling him and carrying him around. Because I know pretty soon he'll be too big for me to carry.

He gives me such happiness and joy! I just love him to pieces.

Thank you Richard (my boyfriend). You knew I couldn't put him down and leave him.

Yes he's been dewormed several times. 5 in 1 vaccine again on thursday, his third.

Re: meet ROSCOE (update at 10 weeks)

Post by kimigirl »

Thank you everyone! You give me such encouragement! I hope I'm doing everything that I can to keep him healthy and happy.

His ear is now back up and not folded anymore (as you can see from my signature). We're going on our third mange injection and 5 in 1 vaccination on thursday. At the moment he needs to take a bath twice a week with a medicated shampoo from the vet. Good thing its unscented since I love his natural smell I find behind his ears.

He makes me laugh everyday with his antics. We're curbing his nipping, biting and nibbling on my ear and hair.
He barks when he needs to relieve himself so I can take him outside, hungry or he's finished his water. (I give him ice water which he enjoys) At times he drinks too fast that I think he gets brain freeze.

He brings me so much joy and love. I miss him everytime I need to do errands and he can't come along. I keep rushing back home to be with him again. I'm the one with the separation anxiety!

Here's an updated photo:

I really know how you feel about rushing home to be with him! I am the same way. I think about my Chows while at work the way I use to think about boyfriends in school...Can hardly wait to see them again! Love the pics!

This was taken during Halloween at PetExpress Pet Parade. Roscoe won the CUTEST DOG!! =D=
He was the youngest and the only one with tricks. \:D/

UPDATE:

as of 2 Nov (11 weeks and 4 days) he's 4.5kg. (+/- 10 lbs.)
His black mask is slowly fading around his nose and is growing red mature fur.
He's started wagging his tail (although not always) - is this normal?

Wagging tail

Post by Jeff&Vicki »

Kimigirl wrote: "He's started wagging his tail (although not always) - is this normal?"

I am not sure what you are asking, but yes, this is normal.
A Chow is not like other dogs that think every stranger is going to give them affection. Mine wag their tails at home when they are happy, but almost never around other people.

You are doing the right thing by socializing him as much as possible, but even at that, he will be wary of strangers and not wag his tail unless he is comfortable in a situation.

I hope this answers your question, Roscoe is lucky to have found you as owners.

Sorry about the vague question. I was wondering about the tail wagging because he never wags his tail. It's glued nicely straight up his back. I've only seen him wag it a bit twice. It was when my sister and boyfriend picked him up. Now i'm worried if he's sad most of the time.

I read somewhere that puppies "discover" their tails at 3 months. I'm praying that this is why. [-o|

I'm the lucky one, I found Roscoe! \:D/

Unless he drops his tail I wouldn't worry about him wagging it. I think the posistion of chow tails makes it harder for some of them to wag them. My girl Firesong almost never wags her tail, I might get a couple of half wags when I call her name, then again I might not, her tail is very high and lays flat on her back. But I know she's happy because she jumps up like a pogo stick and does a piroutte in the air, (at almost 10 years old too!) My boy Dreamdancer wags his who rear end because his tail is in a circle and very tight on his back. The chows that wagged their tails the most were the ones whose tails weren't so tight on their backs, set lower on their spines more like non chows.

Thank you Victory.

I can stop worrying now. Since Roscoe is my first Chow I really don't know what to expect. This forum was a great find for me. I'm so grateful to everyone who takes time out to actually type out a reply or even just to compliment my baby.

Now, if i can just figure out how to lessen his "botty-coughs" and constant nibbling on my toes, all will be good.
He's slowly learning what "no bite" means.

If anyone out there can let me know what to expect next, I'll really appreciate it.

Although I think he'll keep surprising me.

I am enjoying every minute of his puppyhood. \:D/

Most of the time I find myself daydreaming and wishing there was a way to "bonsai" him to keep him a puppy forever. He's almost doubled his size from the time I got him (28 Sept).

Below is a photo taken a few days ago.
He was drinking from a swimming pool fountain (fresh water). He then moved on to a stronger fountain and, lo and behold, he fell in!!! He swam width-wise, TWICE! before he paddled towards my boyfriend to fish him out. I guess he's figured out that swimming is good exercise.

It took a while for me to upload this photo at 3 months.
His appearance has quite changed. His black mask is fading now and his coat has gotten much lighter.
Chewing is all he does these days. We're eagerly waiting for his permanent teeth to come in.

He's 4 months today and will upload a photo soon.

He's now 20 weeks, 22 lbs and 16 1/2 inches tall. He's growing so fast but still a puppy.
He jumps up for me to carry him like he was still tiny.
He lets me cuddle him before i fall asleep then pulls away when he knows I'm falling asleep.
Roscoe enjoys his car rides including having his head out the window. I bought him a Bamboo brand lead with a seatbelt attachment for safety. Loves his Wolf Cub and wont eat anything else!! I give him In Diet as treats which he enjoys.
I've socialised him enough that he enjoys playing and running around with kids and lets strangers pet him.

He's been a joy to raise and a great blessing.

To all Chow Lovers and Chows, A HAPPY CHRISTMAS SEASON TO ALL!!!

Thank you J & C!!!

It's like a online diary of some sorts for me. He's changed a bit more since the last photo.
I think his hormones are making him crazy! He doesn't like me much now and he doesn't listen.

It all doesnt matter to me though. He'll always be my baby Roscoe. He still likes to be carried like a little puppy but pretty soon he'll be too big for me to carry. I'm taking every opportunity that I can.
