In Memory of: Sad News - Shumie has left the world :(
Our little princess passed away at 8pm today. The doctors did everything they could to bring her back to life, but no avail. She was only 3 1/2 months old, and we only had her for exactly 1 month, on this date. The doctors say that she died from bloat. Her stomach was inflated and was tight like a drum, and we couldn't bring her to the emergency vet in time to save her. How common is bloat, and what could have caused it? She threw up yesterday and today, and we were suppose to bring her to the vet tomorrow. Could we have detected the symptoms and done anything to prevent this? After the fact, we did some research and saw that bloat is the #2 killer of dogs; why wouldn't this be published in all of the chowchow books we have read?
Shumie was our baby and we loved her dearly. She was mature and silly at the same time, and probably was smarter than some humans out there. Her aloofness and friendliness was unmatched. We are in shock right now, and dont know what to do. Shumie, if you're reading this, we love you, and miss your dearly. You will always have a special place in our hearts. Life isn't fair, but you are in a better place now shumbear.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss - Shumie was so beautiful. She is now running free across the Rainbow Bridge meeting up with my precious Mrs. Tu lost two months ago. My deepest sympathy is with you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard enough when our chowdren are taken from us at the end of a long life, but to lose a chowling... Your family is in my prayers.

I have tears in my eyes reading this--losing such a young puppy is so hard, especially when it's completely unexpected. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Take some comfort in the fact that she's at peace now.

Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. Our housekeeper, who also has chows, lost her beloved Baby to bloat, despite getting him to the emergency vet and the surgery. In addition, friends lost their Rottweiller to bloat several years ago. I don't think that people know very much about it, I had certainly never heard of it...
Ming and Tempest send their deepest sympathy and please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers, as is your beloved Shumie...

thank you everyone. it feels so unfair to lose shumie. we've only had her for one month. we wanted to see her grow up and the snow didn't even come yet. she would have loved playing in the snow. we're so heartbroken right now. i wish i had read about bloat well before I got shumie. It happened so quick; I wasn't prepared for it at all. But then again, I don't think anyone can truly be prepared to lose a chow.
I can still smell shumie through her stuffed toys. I hope shumie is having fun with all the other chow chows up in heaven.

I am so sorry to read about your loss of Shumie.the pain must be unbearable.she was so young, that is the saddest part.you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
for shumie,
Prehaps God tires, always calling the aged to His fold,
and so He picks a rosebud before it can grow old.
He knows how much we need them,so He only picks a few,
to make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view
Believing this is difficult, yet somehow we must try,
For the saddest word that mankind knows,
Will always be....Goodbye

Re: "Could we have detected the symptoms and done anything to prevent this?"
In your other thread from yesterday, you mentioned gas and that she'd been eating a lot of treats lately. Gas is usually the first sign of digestive problems, and when combined with vomiting symptoms, it becomes a more serious warning.
It's a very sad day for all of us here. Heartfelt condolences to all your family.
Farewell Sweet Shumie. Run free with joy, zooming on that gentle bridge towards peace.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear about little Shumie. My deepest sympathies to you both. I know how tough it is to loose a chow that's only been with you a little while. Big hugs to you.
I'm sure Shumie will be playing with all the chows & being as much of a smarty pants as ever.
Please PM me if you need to talk.
