In memoriam: George's last day

Post by chowdad »

Hello Friends,
We lost our son George yesterday at 5pm. He was 10 years old and most enjoyed chasing rabbits.
We found out at our dr visit 2 days before the he had cancer. That is why he's been very sick for 7 months. With the knowledge that his suffering was not to be cured we decided on euthanasia for him. I hope to become more active here now that I have the time. This group has been a blessing for our family.
Love,
John

I am so very sorry to hear about George. What a tough thing to learn and face. What kind of cancer did he have?

John,

My deepest sympathy. The fact that you called him your son tells how much he was loved. It is painful now, and will be painful in the future, but in the future, the pain will lessen and you will think mostly of the good times. George will never truly be gone as long as he is in your heart

Thanks for the sympathy, I need it. He had a tumor in his head that recently caused hemi-facial paralysis and sores in his mouth, and his nose bled for the last 6 months. He likely had tumors in his chest also, but the tests would require anesthesia and he was too ill.
His beautiful spirit remained intact for his last days, although there were a couple times where his eyes said "let me go", but not in the last two weeks. I took him to his favorite field to play... i.e. go to the bathroom every morning first thing, even though he could barely walk, he hobbled after a bird. some deer, and a turtle in the last two weeks. The morning before we found out about his cancer We saw a rabbit, I drove him by it and he squeaked and got all happy. I set him on the ground a few feet away, and he took off after it and toppled after three or four steps, hopped right up and said " I'm fine can we go home now?"
He was just so weak his little body had given out. His tail wagged almost all the time, he used it to communicate.

John, my deepest sympathies to you .. what a trooper your boy was and how devoted you sound to him. The gift of letting him go was the most precious and yet the most difficult to give. Bless you for loving him so much.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost Luna one year ago today. It seems like yesterday. The pain of losing a pet does subside somewhat. George is in a better place joined by many chowlings.

I am very sorry for your loss. Know in your heart that you gave him the best gift for his years of love and devotion. And that he is now free of pain and chasing lots of rabbits and playing with a lot of other chows that have gone to the bridge.

John,
You have my deepest sympathies.
Your son, George seems to have
enjoyed life, right up thru the
end days. It's a very difficult
thing to let them go, but when
it is time, it is time.
George will run free to chase the
birds over the rainbow.

Oh, John, I'm so sorry. Cherish the life you had with him and the memories you have. George is whole again, free of pain, running around in the fields across the rainbow bridge.

Do tell us more of George and of the cherished moments you had with him if it helps you. We so much love to hear your tales.

Deepest Sympathies,
Leonora & mum

We lost our baby girl, Chia, two years ago this month. It still hurts and I still cry when I read about anyone losing their child on this site...

She'd been delicate (nice word, isn't it) the last several months of her life and couldln't really digest anything other than fat-free cottage cheese (and treats, go figure). All of the tests continually came back negative, we had biopsies, MRI's and everything done and could never find anything. Then, about 3 days before the final day, she just stopped eating entirely, no treats, no nothing. We took her to the doctor thinking that it was perhaps over-heating, as her favorite place to lie (when outside) was underneath the flower-filled window boxes along the great room windows. Unfortunately, they drew blood and fluids, ran some preliminary tests, and determined that she was apparently full of cancer that somehow hadn't been detected previously. When we asked if she was in pain, he said that, no, he didn't think that she was, but that she would be soon. We said right there that she wouldn't be and the decision, which is the hardest decision you'll ever make, was made instantly to let her go.

God bless you for making what is a very difficult and painful decision and for putting George's needs ahead of your own...

One wonderful thing about our furbabies is how they grow into our hearts and even when they are gone...they are still very much alive there....
