Extremely Urgent: 6-Year-Old PB Chow Needs Rescue!

Post by WilsonKathyD »

**PERMISSION TO CROSS-POST!!!***

Please help if you can. A woman who works with my daughters has a six-year-old purebred Chow that she was going to PTS Saturday. I convinced her to wait and let me try to get him into a rescue or get him adopted. Orion, the chow, is a sweet boy in a bad situation. He is UTD on shots and is on heartworm preventive. He may have some hearing loss. His owner was going to have him put down because he bit someone Friday night – the first time he has ever bit anyone. As I understand it, one of the owners’ roommates had a guest over who spent time rough-housing with the dog. At one point, Orion got up, walked away to another part of the room, and stretched out on the floor with his head on his forelegs. The guy who had been rough-housing with him came over and stretched out on top of/beside Orion. Orion apparently did not hear him coming. Suddenly there’s a body there and Orion snapped. He got the guy’s ear; the guy has a cut behind his ear and a small cut on his face. When the roommate stood, Orion released the guy and backed away. Orion’s owner is untrained and does not use what I consider to be sound methods with him. She “spanks” him, yells at him (if he wants to chase a squirrel, etc), and will “beat the crap out of him” (her phrase) if he gets away from her when she walks him. This poor dog has been in four or five different apartments in the past year and is lucky if he gets two five-minute walks a day. He gets no attention and has had no training. He is housebroken, but that’s it. I met him Saturday and, although he was surely stressed from all the commotion and from her yelling at him for biting the guy, he was extremely docile. When I walked in, he did pull back a little and gave about a three second growl. I just stood there and spoke softly to him, let him sniff me, and did not follow him when he walked away. About five minutes later, when his mom and I were sitting at the table having coffee, he came back into the room. I held my hand out, low and palm-up, and spoke softly to him. He approached, sniffed me again, and licked my hand. In less than 20 minutes, I was able to pet him and he was bathing me with kisses. I really believe Orion is not the problem. Please help me find this boy a better life! I can pick him up today if I have somewhere to take him. (I live in a rented house and my landlord won’t allow me to have any more dogs.) Please forgive me if I am going about this the wrong way. I have never tried to get anyone into rescue before, but I have got to get this fellow out of that tiny apartment!

Thank you!

Here's an update on Orion:
Susan emailed me back with several rescue group contacts plus someone that might be able to foster Orion until he can be adopted out. I contacted Kathy to get a little more infor on Orion and called the possible foster parent. I just need to get a little more information from Kathy and I think we have a foster home for now.
This is all very new for me and I'm just trying to follow what Susan has suggested (so, please if anyone can offer advice!).
Here are pictures of Orion. Kathy has convinced the owner to put off doing anything (like PTS) to give us enough time to get Orion into a better situation.

Notes: He weighs about 55 lbs and is neutered.
