Anyone like to help me with a name?

Post by Sahara91 »

Hi all,

I'm new here and new to Chows - a breed I've always wanted. I've been on the lookout for a Chow for months, and finally came across an advert that was local and sounded good. Went to have a look this morning, and ended up bringing an ADORABLE little ball of fluff home with me - only problem is I'm stuck when it comes to names!

So, she's 7wks old (I know, a little young to be leaving her mother, but her breeder said the two pups needed to go ASAP), jet black and so adorably chunky - it was love at first sight. She has a great temperament, very friendly and nosey, was a little reserved to begin with but is showing herself as a cheeky madam after being here for only a few hours.

Any name suggestions welcome, I'm afraid I don't have any photos of her at the mo, my camera chose to fail last week, so pics will have to wait until I can get myself a new camera.

What is her kennel name?
Is there a name on her pedigree - mother, grandmother?

Sukie
Maggie
Milly :D
Mabel :D
Hetty
Hesta
Hilda
Holly (Christmas coming up!)
Tessa
Annie
Bobbie
Daisy
Ellie
Livvy

Can't think of any more as I am trying desperately to think of a baby black chowling and Layla's Alfie comes into my mind. :D

We picked a Chinese name for our new puppy, Ushi (which means Ox in Mandarin). We named our first one Aslan, (since he looked like a lion). If you are interested in an Asian name, there are several listed at http://www.babynology.com/chinese_babynames.html and they give you the meanings too.

I liked these:

Chen-chi which means "beautiful dawn"
Mei-li which means "beautiful/pretty"
Kai-ying meaning "exceptionally bright"
Mulan means "magnolia blossom"
Since she is black, I'm also partial to Midnight.

Let us know what you finally settle on!

Thanks all :)

Judy Fox - Don't think she has a Kennel Name, her breeder knew her as Gloria, but I'm not so keen. Her Sire is Ledgend Midnight (A.K.A. Ebony), and her mother is Ha-Lee.

So much choice!

Do you have a picture of her? I always say you can't name a puppy unless you see it. It will tell you what it wants to be named :)

I would narrow it down to 2 - 3 names and then see what she likes and responds to.I read somewhere to keep it down to two syllables because it is easier for the dog to recognize and for the human to use it.

Alfie just won't do Judy   You & I have cornered the market on Milly / Millie

Hmmmm, Alya will probably suit her in a few years & I like it. I love Holly (we nearly called Millie that & would have if she was red) Did someone suggest Abbie? I like that as well..... I'm better with the boys!

Congratulations anyway & looking forward to the pictures.

No I know Layla, but I just have Alfie in my mind when I think of a little black chowling!

As for Milly and Millie - yes well!

Specially when Carolyn in S.Africa called her pot bellied pigs Milly and Mabel.

She did ask though and they are sweet.

Since you are Sahara, how about a desert themed name:

Kalahari (also in Africa, nickname Kalie)
Karakum (in Asia, nickname Kara)
Sonora (in North America, nickname Sunny or Nora)
Patagonia (in South America, nickname Patty)

And, Sandy (just plain Sandy)!

Ohhhh so many great names!! How about Ebony? Or Kuro/Kuroi (black in Japanese)? I also like Enid or Ashley (you could call her Ash since she's black). Or Godiva if she doesn't like wearing clothes!!

Welcome and I can't wait to see pics. I loooove the black Chows (even if I have 3 reds in my house).

I like finding a name I like in a different language.
We have a black cat so we named her Noir (not sure of the spelling but it's suppose to be French for black)...and for our Chow - Nahkohe which is suppose to be "bear" in the native Cheyenne Indian language.
Karen, Kohana, Takoda, and our Chow Angels Nahkohe and Shiloh

How about the name "Dog", Then she would be the talk of the town and she would already have books written about her.

what about a universally well known and neutral name like "Nuke"?

Nah, that doesn't work for a chowgirl. I'd have to see pictures before I even attempted an idea.

Yeah your right , Poor choice. Now lets see, according to Coren who would be stupider A Chow not responding to dog or Dog the bounty hunter responding to dog all the time. Dog time for dinner and a human comes running.
