I just thought Legend was a nifty name, and when I met the pupper for the first time, he responded to it right away (little black chow tail a-wagging). It's never failed to fit him either :)

Tess is the only one we have who has a somewhat significant story behind her name. Tess came to my family only 2-3 weeks after we lost our first chow mix Zoe. Right after we lost Zoe, we all agreed...no more dogs. It was too hard to lose Zoe, and Zoe had not been an easy dog to deal with, although we couldn't have loved her more. But, we quickly learned as hard as it was to lose Zoe, it was even harder not having a dog around. When my dad found Tess, he couldn't believe that after never seeing black chows in our area at all, he found another homeless black chow. He brought her home as a test...to see if she would be okay with our family, our cats, etc. For all he knew, she could have been this child hating, cat eating, psycho-path. After only a week, our family knew Tess wasn't going anywhere. The name Tess stuck because not only was she our test, but Tess is the name of an angel in the television show Touched By An Angel...it seemed very fitting since it appeared Zoe had sent her to us.

Fiona's name had actually been picked before I ever saw her on the site. I worked with a women who's granddaughter's name was Fiona. I loved the name and since I'm not having children any time soon, I decided the next dog I had would be named Fiona...luckily, I got the rest of the family to agree.

Tacia, my collie, was a name picked at random. She was technically never suppose to stay with us. I picked her up as a stray so she went at least a week, possibly longer with no name at all. Somehow, once I got everyone to agree to her staying (my intentions all along :D ), we landed on the name Tacia. I'm not sure if after 7+ years she still knows it some days, but it seems to fit her.

Our chowling's full name JMayumi of Chowtime - she was just Mayumi for us but since here in the Philippines, littermates ought to be registered under the same first letters of names, which the breeder decided was a "J".

When we found out our friend is gonna let us adopt a chow, hubby and I both agreed we'd name her Yumi - a Japanes name. But we decided to make it a bit more exotic/Filipino like so we gave her the name Mayumi - or lady-like - the trait which we have yet to see with her....

We call her Yumi, Yumi-tot, Mimay (repeated 3x), Mamaw (big hairy monster), Mamay, Oso (spanish & Filipino for bear), Yuyu, Balbon (hairy), chow-chow (like Oi chow-chow! Whatchadoin?), Yu-Mi-May (with the "Mi" on a higher note, etc. - which she responds with either a sigh :? or a happy tail wag.

her doggy house (inside our house) - but mostly just a place to keep her toys... painting done by the kids.

Alex got her name when my son and husband went to pick out a dog at the shelter. They didn't check to see if it was a boy or girl so my son named her Alex. When they got home and i was giving her a bath is when I noticed she was a girl. So now my poor baby....has a boys name but, it suits her I could not see calling Alex anything but that.

Maxwell was named Maxwell either by the shelter or by the people who turned him into the shelter twice ( I can't imagine why) By the time I met Maxwell It had been 2 weeks that I knew of his existence and he just seemed like a Maxwell. Yoshi was originally named Zion. I am not very religious and knew the shelter just gave him that name so I wanted to change his name. Since I am half Japanese I asked Leo's mom to help me with names for about a period of 2 weeks in secret before I got him. His name means good and nice in Japanese.

Nick names maximoto, maxidoodles, maximo
yoshi-monster, yoshi cuda ( I stole it from Hemi cuda ) cuda-monster, coodies.

non chows Misty-adopted with that name sounds like a stripper, I hate it so we call her missy moo or simply moo
Maya - I named her because I am a Spanish teacher and love the Yucatan penninsula and the Mayan art. Her nick names are Ms Coffen, fitties and abledean
Mikimoto- another Japanese name, Mo for short, Mo mo sometimes
Aldo- after a movie I saw in Italian, his nick names are didi, didle bug or just bug.

I love this question, too!!

Angel got her name because we had a Chow that didn't live very long... His name was Bear. My parents went to the place where they'd bought him to complain that he was ill treated by them and found a little white face that looked just like him! Turns out she had pneumonia so they brought her home to give her a safe, happy life!

SO her name is Angel Bear!

Ripely was adopted from a local racetrack.... His racing name was The E.F. Mr. Ripley (Mom was EF and Dad was the Talented Mr. Ripley).... We call him Riples for short! Sometimes we call him Ripelton or Ripeford! No more tiny cages for our Main Man!

Colonel- military in family...also after an SNL skit, featuring Christopher Walken. Colonel just seem to be the name for him. It's not as common as Sarge or Major, but that is part of what makes it special.

Molly McGee is named after my family, as well as my dad's favorite old radio show, Fibber McGee and Molly.
The name fits her, because she is a real comedian.

Princess Buttercup is named after Princess Buttercup of the movie, The Princess Bride....a favorite movie that my children and I shared while they were growing up.
Her name fits her, she acts like a little princess.

Orso is the Italian word for "bear." It seemed way more clever at the time I found him than it does now (so many chows named "Bear!")

Valentina (RIP) was saved from execution on Feb 14.

Poe was the saddest little guy I'd ever seen, so I named him after the most tragic literary figure I could think of :-)

The Shakespeare chows....I needed SEVEN names and I needed 'em FAST! So I went to the Shakespeare website and just started pullin' 'em off and naming puppies...teehee!!!
